I loved seeing all those TOS touches, in what sadly turned out to be Enterprise's last season. Everything from the end of episode banter at T'Pol's expense in Bound, to quite minor changes in the set to reflect a future Enterprise. Greater use of colored lighting gels, interface graphics and tweaks here and there.
I believe like DS9's 4th Season which lured in the TNG audience with Worf and that whole "When Klingons Go Wild" arc, Enterprise would've toned it down the following year, having caught everyone's attention. It's basically one long stretch of sweeps material. That's not to say TOS references couldn't have been in the mix afterwards. They wouldn't have laid them on quite so thick with a guarantee of a few more seasons to play with. Maybe a few stand alone shows connected to TOS about the first Starbase, the Tan Ru/Nomad encounter, another Klingon tale. Then a few arcs continuing ENT originated plots from S1-3. Which leaves the rest of the season building up to the Romulan threat.
Connecting the dots to Kirk and Spock was cool, but it was far more important for Enterprise to forge it's own identity. More stories like Home and Demons/Terra Prime for me please... with serious character development going on all round. Important prequel landmarks can be covered, so long as they have a personal and life changing impact on the NX-01 crew.
