TOS DVD help for a noob :(

Hello,

I am new to this forum and this is my first post.

I am VERY interested in purchasing all of T.O.S. on DVD and need a point in the right direction. It is a present for myself as I have never seen all of the episodes (sad i know..but I'm interested.)

I am not into the whole Blue Ray/HD thing. These episodes, to me are CLASSIC and need to be viewed the way they were originally aired.

That being sad, I noticed on amazon that you can purchase the ENTIRE original series on DVD, remastered.

My question is how much remastering was done, and how much ADDITIONAL special effects were added? I've seen an episode here and there, so will I notice? I mean did they George Lucas this thing to death or is it ok? I really want to see this series in its original format, and don't want any extra kilngons CGI'd into the picture. But, like I said, I want EVERY one. So what do I need to give up and where do I need to shop?

If someone can give me feedback on the BEST dvd series that has every episode I would greatly appreciate your insight.

Thanks in advance,
Doc in FL

Hey I'm a noob here too. :)

I've got the second season of Star Trek on DVD and its awesome. They did a fantastic job touching-up the episodes and they look very fresh, but they don't have modified graphics. There apparently is a remastered version where they have all-new special effects inserted into the old show but the one I've got isn't it. The series I own comes in red, blue (2nd season), and yellow plastic boxes so look for those ones if you want a touched-up but unmodified version of the classic series. Below is an amazon link to it;

Well, if you want to real original experience with original sound mix (aside from City on the Edge of Forever), the Laserdiscs/VHS tapes are the way to go.

However, for great picture and original optical effects, there's a full series set on eBay right now (Jan. 8th).

I have the sets with the new effects and enjoy them, but I still like to watch the original versions (and I can deal with the image on an HDTV).

There are two versions of TOS on DVD - the episodes as they were originally aired, and new "remastered" versions which have been released over the past year. These new versions have replaced all the original FX shots with new CGI, as well as subtly altering other scenes such as backgrounds to planets the crew visit. There are loads of comparison before and after shots around the net to look at - here are a couple to check out:

So, if you want the episodes as they were originally aired, avoid these new "remastered" ones and get the season sets released in 2004. You'll have to be quick, however, as they've been discontinued fairly recently, although you can still pick them up from loads of retailers - the link Sssomcin has linked to is a complete set of these original versions, and the picture quality, while not quite as good as the remastered versions, is still perfectly fine.

And I agree with you, the original versions are always the best :techman:

I was all set to spend buckets of duckets on the new, remastered, new CGI'd TOS sets. Costco had them for $55 a season one day, the cheapest I've seen. The next time I went there, they had none!

We already had the original TOS DVD sets (w/o redone effects/ships), which I'd gotten for about $35 - $45 a season, not a bad deal at all, from possibly Deep Discount and Borders with coupons. I forget.

Anyway, we got a 32" HD (not plasma) TV two weeks ago and a Blu-Ray player (Worst Buy was having a super "no one is buying anything" sale). I popped in "Amok Time" just for the heck of it. You know what? If you don't sit less than 6 feet away from the screen, everything looks just GREAT! Even the effects shots. I'm happy with what I have at this point. We've since thrown in a few other TV shows we own on DVD and they all look great! Hope that helps.
