TOS Caption Contest #144: Hands-On Treatment

iii-1.jpg

Drop 'em and give me twenty!

...last night on Fox's FRINGE, they mentioned Walter use to do nude jumping jacks....

Wait a minute. You mean the nude jumping jacks are REAL? I thought they were just another sick product of Shatmandu's imagination.

Thats my point! I mean, i'm figuring they are Joe's (or someone else's from the BBS) creation....(i've not been here long enough to know the history behind the nude jumping jacks, or NJJ as they shall forever be known from here on in, LOL).....

So, what i am wondering is....does whoever wrote last night's episode read the BBS?

It was so incredibly random the way it was worked into the script.....i just can't see it as anything BUT inspired by the BBS.

Woo-hoo! I'm a winner! The first, and probably the last, time I can use that sentence honestly.

McCoy: God-damn it Jim, make Shatmandu stop using those phrases! I keep looking 'em up on Urban Dictionary, and the medical stores are almost out of brain bleach!

iii-1.jpg

McCoy throttling Kirk, shaking him like a rag doll: "Aaaarrggghhh! Aaaarrrggghhh! Aaaaarrgggghhhh!"

pauses to regain his breath

Kirk: "Have you been eating onions?"

McCoy: "Aaaarrggghhh! Aaaarrrggghhh! Aaaaarrgggghhhh!"

Hey guys!

i have a question: (sorry to break the mood)

Where does the "nude jumping jacks" joke come from? Is it strictly a BBS thing?

I ask, because last night on Fox's FRINGE, they mentioned Walter use to do nude jumping jacks....it was very random the way it was put in....and i was wondering...

Orci, Kurtzman and Abrams are the producers on the show....i don't think any of them wrote last night's episode ....but still...it was very strange!

I saw that too and was wondering if they read it here. As far as I know, it's one of those BBS things like Carl Spock, Grignak, and squeezing one's buttcheeks whilst beating off.

Rat Boy (i dont suppose thats from Malcolm in the Middle?), I'd stake my reputation (as dicey as that is) that it WAS inspired by the BBS. It was just too random (and written into the script JUST to be able to say it).

Now i ask thee, how cool was that???!!!

Im glad to hear you thought it too. You've made my day!

It's a vague Simpson's reference tied into something I did when I was little.

And don't forget: Fringe also had a sombrero joke in its first episode, so it does make you wonder who's looking at what we post around here.

Edit: And if Leonard Nimoy shows up in an afro wig, I'm going to literally die laughing.

Ha! LoLing over your Leonard and the wig remark.
I'll need to hear your rat boy story sometime.
In MitM, Francis was known as Rat Boy in one episode b/c he became the official (and successful) rat killer.

For the life of me, i cannot remember the sombrero joke in Fringe. But now that you said there was one, i'm convinced the writers are peeking in here.

HI WRITERS!!!

and now... back to our regularly scheduled fart and sex jokes....

So did I.

I haven't had a chance to watched Fringe. Guess I'll have to start!

If it was something one of their writers picked up from here, that's very cool. And like RatBoy, if Nimoy gets an afro or is called Carl, I'll burst.

Here's the original caption, back in the Outpost4 days, from around 9-1-2008. (I miss that wonderful guy.)

Chekov: "I just found out I'm the only vohn Doctor McCoy makes do de nude jumping jacks during de physicals."

It certainly matches his expression, and the expression on the others' faces.

Bart eating drywall?

Joe, watching for 20 years, off and on

As an aside, would it be possible to have a thread somewhere, possibly stickied, giving the origin and background info on all of the running gags that the BBS has developed?

Sombreros, Conway Twitty, Carl Spock, Grignak, that alternate universe where everyone is stoned...all that stuff that really confuses the newcomers.

I'll be changing this contest out tonight, so how about if we use the next one to gather that info?

Carl Spock's original threads are gone, I think. His origin was very organic. Bits and pieces were added over time.

I did the name Carl in a non-pimp caption, and Nerys Myk did the first hilarious afro photoshop in a later thread. Sir Rhosis did the pimp names for the rest of the crew. (The Reverend Doctor McCoy still slays me.)

I'll put a call out in the next contest for the others.

Joe, memed

I think I came up with a few of the pimp names. There should be a caption contest from around April of last year that commemorates the one-year anniversary of Carl's debut.

I show no originality and merely capitalize on the running gags!

McCoy: "CHICAGO DIDN'T GET THE OLYMPICS!"

Kirk: "You... shouldn't have.... pushed for.... adding nude jumping jacks as a new... olympic event...."

Reger: I've never seen one that big before.

Spock: I deal with a Shat that is bigger than this and wears a toupee on a daily basis.

I haven't been watching the show, but I looked it up. The writer of last night's episode ("Fracture") also wrote an episode of Enterprise, and he wouldn't be the first (or even the second) writer from that show to have been reading stuff here. It may be coincidence, but then again, it may not.

"GREAT! NOW NUDE JUMPING JACKS ARE TURNING UP ON OTHER SHOWS
AND I'M GONNA HAVE TO SUE SOMEBODY FOR USING MY DIAGNOSTIC
TECHNIQUE WITHOUT PAYING ME A %*##@$& LICENSING FEE!"

That would be a monumental undertaking, even if all of the old caption contest threads were still around. Most of it was pretty spontaneous, the way the majority of captions written are, and some just happened to catch on. It's complicated even more by the fact that the contests in other forums all tend to cross-pollinate with the ones in this forum, as well as with various Photoshop threads, etc..

Sombreros come from the "Blue Warp Nacelles" thread in Trek XI, Grignak and Vomit from the Movies forum contests, Conway Twitty from the GTD Photoshop thread (I think), Carl, Cloud William and Cloud Festus from this forum, assless-chaps Picard and a whole lot of other stuff from the TNG forum contests. Some of the early pictures are collected here, though the attached captions didn't always make the trip.
