TOS and Starship Exeter

One thing I loved about "The Tressaurian Intersection" was how Capt. Garrovick kept privately questioning himself about his handling of the Tressaurians. His wife ended their marriage while he was marooned on Tangaro and then his former C.O. and former ship were all killed by the Tressaurians' aggression. The tension between Garrovick and Cuddy was great.

I loved the Garrovick-Harris-Cuddy triangle. Similar, though very different than Kirk-Spock-McCoy.

And the supporting characters were fantastic. Azato, B'Fuselek and of course the doomed heroine Richards were tremendous! In many ways, it reminded me of Year 3 TOS and its ensemble stories.

OP: I agree with your view of Exeter fitting in the universe of TOS. In the review thread of TTI, I commented on that:

The complete TTI was well worth the test of patience! I sort of expected the "guest star" outcome, as the mid-episode focus is similar to the way such guests were used not only on TOS, but other 1960s series. That said, the emotional impact was not lost.

The overall tone and character interplay sold the episode as genuine TOS-era Star Trek. I can imagine this crew functioning in the same universe of the Enterprise like the many guest star captain, lieutenant and commodore characters seen on TOS.

On that note...

Each ship has it's own captain who runs it his way- Kirk had his style and Garrovick had his. it is refreshing to see a show not trying to clone the original series but telling a good story which can stand on it's own.

From Stone, Decker & Tracey to Bob Wesley, TOS was great at establishing captains with their own, strong personalities, none appearing to be clones of Kirk. If they were distinct leaders, we can imagine their crew also having identities of their own.

Exeter--with a larger cast--built on the idea of distinct Starfleet officers, but at the end of it all, they felt like they were part of the larger organization.
