I must admit, I did find the approach taken by series one Torchwood to be highly irritating. RTD's boast, 'in this series, EVERYONE has a same sex kiss!', seems to be nothing more than an attempt to Make A Statement. Rather than having a gay or bisexual character, everyone was forced into situations, irrespective of what we knew about them, to support an agenda. I found this undermined both the drama and characterisation on the show.
Ianto was the extreme case of this. Just weeks after his girlfriend is murdered, he's playing stopwatch games with her killer. Ludicrous.
And just for the record, it is not the fact that homosexuality and bisexuality occurred on Torchwood that annoyed me. It is the hamfisted, bungling portrayal during season one that did. I hope that statement was unnecessary, and that my fellow TrekBBSers understand where I'm coming from on this. But in my experience it is distressingly common for peoples views to be misunderstood.
Don't worry I understand what you mean perfectly, and agree. When the show did it well (ie Jack and Jack) it was much better.
