Top Five Moments - season 1

I know we've all talked about our favorite episodes, but what about just moments. I'll do threads for every season.

My pics for season 1...in chronologic order
1) Caretaker - Janeways speech at the end of the episode. Pretty much sets up the whole show.
2) Time and Again - when Tom tells the kid they ate their child. Just a funny moment.
3) Prime Factors - when Tuvok is the one who makes the exchange. It was something you weren't really expecting from him. Plus the looks on all the faces when he comes in the transporter room and they think they're busted is pretty funny.
4) Jetrel -when the transporter is trying to bring back one of the Talaxiand and you see a person beginning to form in the beam. It looked amazing.
5) Learning Curve - GET THE CHEESE TO SICKBAY! that just cracks me up for some reason.

Not the easiest picks since i think season 1 is the weakest of all the seasons

The closing scene in State of Flux might be my favorite from season 1... I'd have to think about the other 4.
I wish they had done more development between Chkotay and Tuvok. I like their manner of interacting, when they had the opportunity.

(Chakotay goes straight to Tuvok, who is reading at his corner table.)
CHAKOTAY: Can I ask you to be honest with me, Lieutenant?
TUVOK: As a Vulcan, I am at all times honest, Commander.
CHAKOTAY: That's not exactly true. You lied to me when you passed yourself off as a Maquis to get on my crew.
TUVOK: I was honest to my own convictions within the defined parameters of my mission.
CHAKOTAY: You damned Vulcans and your defined parameters. That's easy for you.
TUVOK: On the contrary. The demands on a Vulcan's character are extraordinarily difficult. Do not mistake composure for ease. How may I be honest with you today?
CHAKOTAY: I'd just like to know, from someone else who pulled the wool over my eyes, was I particularly naive? Was I not paying enough attention? What the hell was it that let all you spies get by me?
TUVOK: Like all humans, you depend on feelings and instincts to guide you, and they invariably let you down. But particularly naive? No, Commander, and I've always considered your attention span to be adequate.
CHAKOTAY: Did you ever see anything about Seska that make you suspicious?
TUVOK: No. She quite expertly pulled the wool over my eyes as well.
CHAKOTAY: Well, that makes me feel a little better. Thanks.
TUVOK: Curious.
CHAKOTAY: What?
TUVOK: That my failure, added to your own, should improve your feelings.
CHAKOTAY: Misery loves company, Tuvok.

Not the easiest picks since i think season 1 is the weakest of all the seasons

For myself it is not the easiest picks because I don't watch this season repeatedly like I do 3,4,5. Case in point, I forgot that good scene between Tuvok and Chakotay.

Agreed. I usually start my rewatches at season 4

1.Caretaker: When Chakotay is whisked away from death by the transporter he walks up to the woman at the transporter station and touches her shoulder with a smile and a nod of thank you. So often back drop characters perform amazing feats that save people but never get acknowledged. I love that scene for that reason.

2. Parallax: When Carey is in sickbay screaming about B'Elanna breaking his nose and the doctor, clearly frustrated, keeps pushing him back on the table for treatment. Hilariously funny and really showed where the doctor could go as a character.

3. State of Flux : The scene between Tuvok and Chakotay already mentioned.

4.The Cloud: Janeway's reaction to Neelix's coffee supplement and the line 'There is coffee in the Nebula,' followed later by 'I guess I'll just have to give up coffee.' Like that would ever happen but still it's funny.

5.The Cloud: I love the scene where Janeway is fascinated by the idea of spirit animals and journeys to find one. She is like a child, exploring new concepts and ideas. She is also light hearted, like a free spirit, as if, for a moment, she has forgotten where she is and the responsibilities she now holds. I liked this Janeway a lot.

 

[Refuge]

Not in any order or even top five but maybe moments that signify.

* 'Caretaker' - so what Sophie said. Will go for the quote before it though as it highlights the underrated Neelix.
NEELIX: Whatever you need is what I have to offer. You need a guide? I'm your guide. You need supplies? I know where to procure them. I have friends among races you don't even know exist. You need a cook? Oh, you haven't lived until you've tasted my angla'bosque. It will be my job to anticipate your needs before you know you have them. And I anticipate your first need will be me.

* 'Parallax' - The Doctor shrunk down on his chair

* 'The Phage' for introducing the Vidiians. Another Neelix moment, when it was revealed his lungs had been harvested.

* 'The Cloud' as mentioned above the classic "There's coffee in that Nebula"

* 'Eye of the Needle' - (sad)
TUVOK: I'm sorry to report Doctor R'Mor died in 2367.
JANEWAY: That was four years ago.
TUVOK: That is correct. Before he would have sent our messages.

Eye of the needle was a great episode. My only read criticism is that it happens too early. I think it would have worked much better as the series finale instead of learning curve

Upon further thought, I'd like that episode in season 2 or 3. It seemed too early to get their hopes up. And they had that platform on the planet one same season...eh it was getting old before the show began (for me)

Hmm. Season two was dominated by Seska and it might have felt a little weird giving them a way home when we thought she was carrying Chakotay's baby. That wasn't resolved until the start of season 3.

Season 3 we have False Profits almost sending them home and Future's End when they do go home but wrong time. Do you think it would be too much adding another chance?

It just struck me that I have to re-write my list!

How could I forget the best moment in season 1, the one in "Caretaker when Kim says: "We're on the other side of the galaxy!"

Every time I watch this episode and see this scene, I get goosebumps. Just like the fists time I watched "Caretaker" and saw this scene and I realized "Now the adventures really start!"
