Top 5 favorite TOS episodes.

What is it that fans like about Doomsday Machine? I've noticed in the real world that it is a favorite with male fans particularly. Yes, I have contacts with the real world now and then.

Terrifying idea, and excellent science-fiction premise: the mobile doomsday weapon that survives its makers. It doesn't even need the Cold War connection to be compelling, but it's a great Cold War analogy too.

Good sci fi, the madness of Decker, Kirk's bad-assedness even off the Enterprise, superb soundtrack. And my favourite of all, Lieutenant Palmer's "...then we lost it," line.

My favorite five are:

1 - The Trouble with Tribbles
2 - Balance of Terror
3 - The Enterprise Incident
4 - The Cloud Minders
5 - The Ultimate Computer

I don't know about an "offcial" list, but my top five are:

Mirror, Mirror
The Trouble With Tribbles
Amok Time
The Naked Time
The Doomsday Machine
The Ulitmate Computer
The Enterprise Incident

Yeah, I know that's seven, but I failed math every time I ever took it.

1- balance or terror
2- ultimate computer
3- doomsday machine
4- tholian web
5- journey to babel

My Top 5, in no particular order:

Space Seed
Is There in Truth No Beauty?

It is a seriously underrated story, a "sleeper". I found it very effective. Most of it is the build-up before we ever see the alien machine. ("They say there's no Devil, Jim. But there is... right out of Hell I saw it!") William Windom did a fine job of a capable officer traumatized by a devastating attack. The ending is both suspenseful (even when you've seen it a hundred times) and hilarious. What keeps it on my runners-up list is that middle part, everyone shows uncharacteristically bad judgement, especially allowing Decker to assume command and make the whole thing into Moby Dick; that threatened to derail the story for a minute there before Kirk saved the day. And I don't like the cliche of another Connie lost with its entire crew dead, and all Kirk and Spock can do at the end is philosophize as if ho-hum. I would expect them to be in mourning at the loss of 400 of their fellow starship crewmen. (This is a flaw shared by "The Ultimate Computer", but the later has a stronger concept behind the story.)

Under-rated? Universally beloved is more like it. I think Decker taking over was just one phase of the traumatization. He feels like a total failure who got his crew killed and that's unbearable, so he falls back on the one thing he's got left that gives him a little dignity, his rank, and the fact that it's illegal for the crew to defy him. He's grasping for straws, as if taking charge of another ship (and "fixing" things re the doomsday weapon) will erase what happened to the first.

I don't like Moby Dick plots either.

As for mourning, maybe they need to breathe a big sigh of relief and cheer up a little, after saving all of creation from a superweapon they thought was invincible.

Indeed; nearly. I disliked it for years and wouldn't watch it, were it the only thing on. Then I found out (quite some time ago) how many males have it as their favorite episode.

I liked William Windom a lot in "Farmer's Daughter" with Inger Stevens; it's the character of Decker that I dislike. I'd like to strangle him and don't find the episode entertaining; grim, in fact. I will only watch it on principle, if I'm watching DVD's in order.

Doomsday Machine is a classic episode and I have strong memories of being scared as a child my eyes out on stalks at the telly! Very Phallic too....maybe thats it....! ;)

Amok Time
The Trouble with Tribbles
The Empath
Whom Gods Destroy
This Side of Paradise

btw I'm new =D

Top 5

Immunity Syndrome
Tholian Web
That Which Survives
Mirror Mirror
City on the Edge of Forever

Heavy focus on ship on sci fi and or the "characters" of the three leading males. By the way Dani, you have odd choices which fascinate me, but I think you're a bit too even handed with a couple of the turkeys you picked. You are a woman. LOL

Mirror, Mirror - Love those alternate universes.
Amok Time - Theodore Sturgeon - Need I say more?
The City on the Edge of Forever - A touching time travel tale.
All Our Yesterdays - I still want one of those disks.
