I really enjoyed Planet Hulk and liked World War Hulk and all the ties and everything (I especially liked the one with the X-men and Damage Control Trades in the WWH set of books).
But why is the Hulk not dumb anymore?
Also, how is he able to stay the Hulk for so long (he changes only twice or thrice in Planet Hulk and that too very very briefly)?
Finally, have they started Hulk again? I know that they had terminated Hulk and started with The Incredible Hercules following Cho (with or w/out pup in tow - call me silly but I always smile at that
) and Herc. Sorry for the brief segue into Hulk land ... but the big green guy can't be kept bottled up! Pops out all the time!
Because during Planet Hulk he learned to mix strategy with his raw power. A Hulk that can direct that rage and strength is an extremely dangerous enemy.
It's because he's just that damned angry. Angry at being betrayed by the Illuminati and later angry at the destruction of his new home and the death of his wife.
A very good example of the Hulk's new found intelligence can be found in the World War Hulk: X-Men tie in. It's basically just the Hulk fighting the entire X-Men in waves for three issues.
This is where the Hulk shows his intelligence. He punches Wolverine so hard his brain smashes in to his adamantium skull, taking him out of the fight. Then, he beats Juggernaut by Irish-whipping him away knowing he can't stop. Throughout the battle, he makes smart, tactical decisions instead of just randomly smashing. For instance, Monet tells him it's useless trying to hurt her as she's invulnerable so he grabs her, throws her away and says "Go be invulnerable in Jersey!"

Hulk now appears in a title just entitled "Hulk" written by Jeph Loeb which is somewhat poor. He's writing the Hulk as being dumb again, while on the other side of the story there's a mystery Red Hulk who shows signs of greater intelligence but nobody knows who he is.
All of his planning would be for nought if he were to go up against Groo The Wanderer. Anybody who works Groo into their plans is doomed.
Great poll. I think there are some stand-outs in DC, like Batman, but overall think the Marvel characters are more interesting. Batman feels like a Marvel character -- someone who was created imperfect and makes up for his imperfections sometimes with his special skills.
Well if by Captain America you mean Steve Rodgers I am sure at this moment even I can kick his ass. I've only read a bit of DC so obviously I'd pick Marvel all the way, but how do you think either team would do against one of these teams?

A top five list would be more prudent anyway. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and the Flash vs. Spider-Man, Captain America, Hulk, Wolverine and Iron Man.

So you're saying that he basically gains that intelligence over the year (that's what it seems to approximate to in something that I had read) and doesn't forget it (like he's been forgetting over the years that he's spent on earth - ignoring the mean gray hulk and 'Professor' Hulk or even 'Leader' Hulk (the one from the future as in 'Future Imperfect'- not the other Leader). I still find that strange - maybe it's something to do with the planet's physiology. Also, in his early years (I have read a few of those B&W Essentials that they come out with), Hulk got shipped out to space several times meeting various cosmic entities (High Evolutionary, Beta Ray Bill, Inhumans, Black Bolt etc.). Also, there are several stories where a "friend" betrays him. Either these are real friends and the betrayal is the Hulk's incorrect view of things or the friend is actually a criminal masquerading to gain the Hulk's confidence (eg. at one time, the Abomination gets the Hulk to work with him!! ). None of those stories led to Hulk either gaining intelligence or getting so mad at his betrayal that he just doesn't change back to Banner.
Thanks for the explanation. I liked the WWH tie-in with the X-men - I thought it was poignant that he leaves after viewing the X-men graveyard. I also incorrectly listed Damage Control as the other tie-in that I liked. I actually meant Gamma Corps. I thought he was written as both humane, angry, smart in that one too! In a way, I like Planet Hulk (which was almost Dune-like in it's Sakaarson mythology) and the X-men, Warbound and Damage Control tie-ins more than the main World War Hulk story. Sure I enjoyed the "I didn't come to hear you whisper! I came to hear you scream!!" or even Hulk defeating Iron Man (after Civil War, you just root for Hulk so much in that fight). But some of the other books are very enjoyable and satisfying.
I think that was a really good thru-story that Greg Pak (I think he was primary writer for that) came up with and it adds to Marvel's rich back-history with the Warbound characters and also Skaar (which I'm hoping to read the trade for when my library gets it). So all in all, I really like the whole Planet Hulk-World War Hulk storyline even tho' it may be possible to poke a few holes in them.

I was always partial to Marvely so that's how I voted. Esp. in the 1970s, when Marvel had many more daring characters like Deathlok, Adam Warlock, and Kilraven from the War of the Worlds comic. However, DC has a number of great characters, too, which are more in the public consciousness (Superman and Batman, of course). Glad the X-Men and Spider-Man received good big-screen treatments, which has helped bring them more into the public's consciousness. I hope to see some of DC's more unusual characters brought to the big screen, like Jack Kirby's Mister Miracle and The Demon, for example. -- RR

This list was voted on by people predisposed to reading comic books. If it was voted on by the general public, both MM and Nightwing would likely be replaced by Captain Marvel and Aquaman.
Oracle could remain, in the context that she's identified as Batgirl. Tim Drake is Robin, so there should be no controversy there.

As for the Marvel list, I think most of the public would identify Hawkeye as a sitcom character more than a comic book character.

Is this a contest of who can kick the most ass or of who can commit the most egregious violations of basic human decency? If it's the former, team Image all the way; The Boys's heavy hitters are just too incompetent to be of any use, which leaves the melee fighters - Spawn alone could take the whole bunch out. Now, if we're taking about man's inhumanity to man and just general assholery, The Boys win by a mile, they go beyond dark and gritty to dredge the depths of human depravity at a level even the vile evil of demons could not imagine.
