Top 10 Games of 2008

I don't think I even played ten games this yar (money and time being the hindering factors) But here's what I played in a pretty loose rank:

1. Grand Theft Auto IV- Really the best so far in the series. It completely dominated my summer. There's a lot to be said for a game that is still fun (and possible more so) if you just completely ignore all of the missions and cause mayhem everywhere.

2. Chrono Trigger DS- Ok, maybe this doesn't count as it's technically a port, but Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games ever, and I was so happy to see new life breathed into again (not that it ever got dull before)

3. Fallout 3- Massive and free roaming gameplay made me waste hours and hours of my life on this one.

4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl- It's Smash Bros. What else needs to be said?

5. Fable II- A marked improvment over the first even if the ending was still crap.

6. Gears Of War 2- I prefer Gears to Halo. There I said it. Gears is the most fun shooter out there. Horde mode is addictive.

7. Braid- Such a fascinating and addictive puzzler. Few games have ever flexed my brain as hard

8. Mario Kart Wii- Mario Kart is a popular past time for my friends and me. So, we had just as much fun with the Wii version as we did the others.

9. Lego Indiana Jones/Lego Batman- I love the Lego games. They have a charm and humor all their own.

In no particular order:

Rock Band 2
The Force Unleashed
Dead Space
Wrath of the Lich King
Soul Caliber IV
RE4: Wii Edition
WiiFit

That's about it. GTA4 just ended up pissing me off after I really enjoyed the first half, and I thought that Oblivion was better than Fallout 3 (the gameplay and setting didn't grab me once you leave the vault). I don't think I've played much else that was new this year. For my money though, Wrath and Rock Band have been the better investments. I've easily spent 10 days of gaming time playing Rock Band.

If you liked Soul Caliber, try MK vs DC -It uses the same basic approach but has a more interesting take on the characters abilities, IMO.

COD 4
COD WaW
Fallout 3
GTA IV
Colonization
Left 4 Dead

I just do not see how characters like Johnny Cage could ever do anything to the likes of Superman

^ You're the man, clint. IIRC, you're TrekBBS' other resident Shenmue fan, yeah?

Anyway, looking forward to Vesperia, P3:FES, and P4. They're all confirmed for '09 here :)

Screw you man, I've stacked my share of warehouse crates!

I also pine for SM3.

I got another game yesterday that I wanted to add to my top 10 list: Valkyria Chronicles. I gotta say, this game is seriously good and every single PS3 owner should get it. I know it's a bit early (I've only played it for about 10 hours so far) but this could just be my GOTY.

Thankyou.

PS3 owners have no business complaining about a lack of games when they let this one pass. It's easily one of the most innovative titles of the past ten years, one of the bravest examples of new IP for the current generation, the very apex of its genre, amongst the finest PS3 exclusives and one of the best games of this generation - for any platform.

Seriously, PS3 owners? There's a goddamned free demo. Also, buy it now or pay $500 for it on eBay next year when people retroactively decide that, yeah, maybe it's a little more interesting than Generic Shooter #652.

Anyhow...

Bigfoot, have you done Mission 7 yet? The one where Squad 7 takes on the Batomys and Sylvania? The first two times I tried that mission I got totally annihilated. The third time I'd seriously wisened up and made every move count - although at the end of every phase I honestly thought it would be my last. I honestly thought it was all over when Sylvania and her backup troops arrived. I sent a single shocktrooper to his death taking out all her support troops, then somehow managed to position my lancers on the opposite site of the Batomys to where she was standing. I also managed to use the Edelweiss to keep her away from my guys, which was just plain lucky. Once I took out that last radiator, I just spammed that baby with lancer fire until the big kaboom. The shot that ended the match was the last rocket any of my lancers had left, and my last command point. I don't know what would've happened in the next turn, and I'm sure as hell glad I didn't have to find out :D

It took me 17 turns and around 2 hours, though I know I could've done it in less if I actually had, y'know, a plan in place. Still, it was totally exhilerating and after reading everybody else's experiences with this mission I'd say I pulled up pretty well. Even if I only ranked a H. :D

^ I totally agree with your first point.

And yeah, I just finished mission 7 earlier today. The first try I got killed pretty quickly, the second one I got killed when Sylvania arrived and then I was successful in the third try. It actually only took me 12 turns to complete the mission (I got a C grade). Awesome mission btw, seriously cool. :D
