Top 10 Games of 2008

I reckon '08 has been one of the best years in gaming in a long time, even after the relative awesomeness that was '07, and the dreck that was '06. In fact, I think I've spent more money on games this year than I have in the past 3, so I'm kind of hoping for a quiet year next year ;)

So, my top 10 in no particular order. Note that some of these games were released in 2007 in North America, but only in 2008 in Australia. So there.

Valkyria Chronicles
Yakuza 2
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams
Far Cry 2
Left 4 Dead
Braid
Endless Ocean
SEGA Superstars Tennis
Viking: Battle for Asgard

Fire away, kids.

My list, also not in order:

Super Smash Brothers Brawl
Mario Kart Wii
Left 4 Dead
Tales of Vesperia
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Fallout 3
Apollo Justice
Okami (Wii version, never played the PS2 version)
Chrono Trigger (DS remake)
Kirby Super Star Ultra (DS remake)

Little Big Planet
Metal Gear Solid 4
Motorstorm: Pacific Rift
Fallout 3
NHL '08
Grand Theft Auto IV
Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty
Wipeout HD
Pixeljunk Eden
Pixeljunk Monsters

Persona 4 (PS2)
Persona 3 FES (PS2)
Tales of Vesparia (Xbox 360)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3)
Dead Space (Xbox 360)
Chrono Trigger (DS)
Devil May Cry 4 (Xbox 360)
Mirror's Edge (PS3)
The World Ends With You (DS)
Fallout 3 (Xbox 360)

It turned out to be an excellent year for RPGS. I've sunk over 135 hours on persona 3 FES, 65 hours on Persona 4 (still haven't beaten this one yet) and 100 hours on Tales of Vesparia. Pretty shocking considering over the past 4 years the amount of time id spend on games took a massive decline.

^ You're the man, clint. IIRC, you're TrekBBS' other resident Shenmue fan, yeah?

Anyway, looking forward to Vesperia, P3:FES, and P4. They're all confirmed for '09 here :)

Indeed, someones gotta keep the Shenmue love alive. Anywas you're in for a real treat with Vesperia, FES and P4. Each of em are amazing and incredibly time consuming. you definetly get your moneys worth with each of them.

I have barely played 10 new games this year, certainly not "game of the year" candidates anyway!

Let's think:

Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3)
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 (PC)
Command & Conquer: Kane's Wrath (PC, Expansion)
FIFA 09 (Xbox 360, PSP)
Rock Band (Xbox 360, not released over here until this year)
Rock Band 2 (Xbox 360)
Guitar Hero: World Tour (Xbox 360)
WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009 (PS3)
Dead Space (PC)
Mass Effect (PC)
Super Stardust Portable (PS3)

Of that list, I can only fairly say that Grand Theft Auto IV deserves a game of the year nomination.

I honestly can't remember anything before MGS4/GTA4... there needs to be some kind of reference guide. :p

Persona 4 (PS2)

It turned out to be an excellent year for RPGS. I've sunk over 135 hours on persona 3 FES, 65 hours on Persona 4 (still haven't beaten this one yet) and 100 hours on Tales of Vesparia. Pretty shocking considering over the past 4 years the amount of time id spend on games took a massive decline.
It only took me 35 hours to beat Vesparia. I think I missed most of the side quests.

Persona 4 (PS2)

yeah, the side quests in Vesparia are extremely time sensitive so its pretty easy to miss out on them. I think I probably got only around 75 percent of them and some of them, such as the hidden dungeon, can only be obtained by going back to a completed game and continuing from the end.

I haven't even played 10 diffrent games but still there is some great stuff out there right now.

Far Cry 2
Grand Theft Auto
Crysis: Warhead
Fallout 3

These are some great games.

Dead Space
Fallout 3
Gears of War 2
Grand Theft Auto 4
Left 4 Dead
Little Big Planet
Metal Gear Solid 4
Rock Band 2
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
World of Warcraft : Wraith of the Lich King

Of those I've played

1. Dead Space
2. Braid
3. Left 4 Dead
4. Fallout 3
5. Gears of War 2
6. Call of Duty: World at War (would be #1 if it weren't really just a beefed up clone f COD4. Still, it's a great game and deserves praise.)
7. Grand Theft Auto IV
8. Mass Effect
9. Prince of Persia
10. Far Cry 2

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)
Wipeout HD (PS3)
Mario Kart Wii (Wii)
Red Alert 3 (PC)
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (PC)

World of Goo, Mount & Blade, King's Bounty: The Legend, GRID, and that's it. Since the PC port of GTA4 sucks loads, I found the rest of the releases to be utterly mundane.

In no particular order:

Rock Band 2
The Force Unleashed
Dead Space
Wrath of the Lich King
Soul Caliber IV
RE4: Wii Edition
WiiFit

That's about it. GTA4 just ended up pissing me off after I really enjoyed the first half, and I thought that Oblivion was better than Fallout 3 (the gameplay and setting didn't grab me once you leave the vault). I don't think I've played much else that was new this year. For my money though, Wrath and Rock Band have been the better investments. I've easily spent 10 days of gaming time playing Rock Band.

Metal Gear Solid 4
LittleBigPlanet
Motorstorm 2
MK vs DC
Mario Kart Wii
FIFA 09
Gears 2
Resistance 2
Wipeout HD
Spore
