Tom Kring for Series 6?

I mean, why not?

Heroes is extremely popular, and Kring must be a Trek geek of sorts, given the Trek references he sprinkled into several episodes of season one.

Not only that, old TOS veterans are appearing on the show, which must also be Kring's doing, or at least have his sanction.

I get the feeling he'd do a pretty damned good job as showrunner for a new Trek series...

I don't see a problem with that. But I wouldn't want it to be in the mold of HEROES. As much as I enjoy it, I think those type of high concept series which I think of as serialization taken to the Nth degree are so demanding of viewer attention and are so unique--multiple mysteries, puzzle pieces approach to the story, the series essentially being One Big Story--that I wouldn't want that to be the wave of the future for tv in general or Trek in particular.

I would be more than happy though to have a serialized Trek show that would be on par with the style and approach of the Occupation arc or the Final Chapter.

As for the stunt casting of Trek actors--I don't mind that on HEROES but I wouldn't want it on Trek.

It's funny that every time a showrunner strikes gold with a hit show, his or her name is brought up for the job of helming Series 6. When West Wing was flying high, Aaron Sorkin was the proposed heir apparent. When Buffy and Angel were doing good, Joss Whedon was suggested. Now Tim Kring is the new golden boy. Sheesh.

I think that, with the Trekkie fanbase so fragmented and argumentive, helming a new series is probably the most thakless job out there, second to the US Presidency. Any showrunner worth his or her salt would never be stupid enough to step into that hornets' nest. T

That may be true, but in Heroes, Kring has created something popular with the people that is essentially a graphic novel on the small screen.

It is rare for a sci-fi genre show, I mean one that has characters with superpowers, to be this successful on a "major" network. Smallville, Galactica, Atlantis, Eureka, etc., --none have received this much broad appeal.

Kring appears to be a Trek nerd of the highest order with all the references he's snuck in and guest stars he's lined up--if he could bring his midas touch to Trek, I think it would be fantastic.

Even if it ends up being a bit serialized, given what he's done with the characters and storylines in Heroes, he'd probably be able to breath new life into televised Trek. Maybe set it in the future so he'd have an entire canvas all to himself to paint on...

Tim Kring...well sure, he's proven that he's good at casting actors well in roles and juggling multiple complex plotlines to create a strongly serialized plotline that hangs together pretty well, considering the difficulty of what he's attempting (I've never seen a serialized show that does this nearly as well, unless it's on premium cable and the rules are different there...)

Kring also seems to understand which actors are working out the best in which roles, and which characters have chemistry with each other that needs to be capitalized on. Having good instincts counts for a lot.

But he does tend to use cliche as a crutch, resulting in overly predictable writing, and his dialogue can be laughable and corny. Do we really want Mohinder's blowsy philosophizing in a Trek context? I can just envision some pompous Starfleet gasbag going on and on like that...

I'd rather see Manny Coto brought back. He was on the right track in S4 of ENT. And Ron Moore will be available by then, too. Maybe they can play well together?

Many and Tim, yes... Ron Moore and Tim, no.

I don't think ego-wise Ron and Tim could coexist, and both would likely bring different visions to the show. Many I think would be a great team player and keep the Trek in Trek.

Nah, keep it under the Abrams/Lindelof/Cuse empire. When 'Lost' finishes it's run in three years that would be the perfect time to launch a series. :)

I like Tim Kring and 'Heroes' though, so that would certainly be a respectable choice as well. I agree with what somebody above said though about all these 'names of the moment' that people always bring up to run Star Trek. Personally I wouldn't mind bringing back Manny Coto, simply because I would love to see what he would do with a Star Trek TV series of his own creation.
