I thought Hanks should have done a HOW THE SOLAR SYSTEM WAS WON using the rejected draft of 2001, but this is the next best thing, he is having Yost write a movie based on the great Mattel toy from the 60s!

Just when you think MM has passed into obscurity ...

Not sure how to feel about this. I loved MMM when I was a kid, and I think it has great retro interest now, but I have a hard time seeing them staying true to the look of the toys, and without that, it's just not MMM. If they make it more realistic, it'll just be another space movie, and if it looks like MMM, people will giggle at it - unless that's the plan, which would suck.

In a time before you could zap through 30 cable channels or surf endless hours in the internet, the Beatles released the first concept album "Stg. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" and nearly 400.000 US soldiers were stationed in Vietnam, Mattel presented us their man in space - Major Matt Mason.
That was 1967!

Major Matt Mason, short MMM named, were created after the American space programme. The early vehicles and spacesuits are all based on Nasa prototypes. That was an important element for many boys that made this toyline so popular, despite its short life from 1967 - 1970. Like many people of its time, especially the boys followed the manned rocketstarts with fascination in front of the bulky b/w television sets. Who didn't wanted to be an astronaut and exploring distant planets?

I owned Sgt Storm, Scorpio, the Rover, and a few accessories as well as an XRG-1. Ah, fond memories of being a child in the height of the Space Age...

I really want to see where they go with this. If the movie gets off the ground (), there's talk about a revival of the toy line. But will this be retro goodness, or based on the latest conjectural designs? Dunno. Curious though.

And seriously, what's the story? I don't remember any mythos to it other than a team of space men, some cool gear and an alien.

Stangely enough, the toy line wasn't really that successful, which is why it had a such a short life.

There really wasn't much of a story, other than what was going on in the headlines of the time to create the story for them. Man was going to the moon, and the Major, the Sgt, and the other 2 astronauts were a kids way of playing in that theater as it were. Matts suit and much of the early gear was based on speculative designs for NASA gear.

Man got to the moon. To much of the public, it suddenly became nearly commonplace and boring. The Majors popularity faded, despite Mattel bringing 2 aliens and more fantastic equipment into the inventory.

Some of us remember, and still dream of travel skyward.
