I saw the trailer for this at the cinema and it looks impressive. They seem to be taking it far more seriously with events that have happened in japan in recent years partly inspiring the tone of the film. They only thing I noticed about the big G that his features are rather frozen, he doesn't seem to be all that animated and looks more of a zombie Godzilla.

"Supposedly this upcoming feature, GODZILLA: RESURGENCE (in English) will go back to the original film, when Godzilla was killed by the Oxygen Destroyer. Apparently he’s been regenerating in the decades since, and when we first see him in the movie he’s still looking kinda rough, all raw and bloody and zombie-like. By the end of the movie he’ll be back to his scaly self."

This was from back when the project was first announced.

Am I the only one who thinks its scary as fuck if Godzilla could survive the Oxygen Destroyer?

Ooh, the press release says that co-director Shinji Higuchi did the effects in the '90s Gamera Trilogy. I just watched those (the ShoutFactory TV streaming site has all the Gamera movies except the most recent one, for free and in Japanese), and they featured some of the best FX and design work I've ever seen in a kaiju movie.

Whoa...
While previous Godzilla movies have linked back to the 1954 original, the makers of GODZILLA RESURGENCE chose to present a story in which Godzilla appears in Japan for the first time.

I'm shocked. One of the most interesting things to me about the Godzilla series is that it's had seven different continuities that all included the events of the '54 original. Godzilla 2000 contained no onscreen references to the '54 film, but background materials revealed that its Godzilla was a second one that had emerged several years before the film's events. Even the 2014 Legendary Pictures film established that Godzilla had been known to the military since 1954, even if his attack on Tokyo didn't occur in that continuity. (And the '98 TriStar film said that its "Godzilla" was named through mistaken identity with a giant reptilian creature from pre-existing Japanese lore -- or possibly, as GMK later implied, from Japanese history.) So this will be the first time since 1954 that a Japanese movie -- or arguably any movie -- has portrayed the first appearance of Godzilla. That is not something I ever expected. I guess that scuttles all the fan theories about how this Godzilla is a regenerated version of the one from GMK or something.

Looks like most of the characters, including the three leads, are government or SDF officials. Only a few nameless scientists or journalists, and evidently not much of a person-on-the-street focus in this one.

I didn't realize this was being made by the creator of Neon Genesis Evengelion, I really liked that until it fell apart into nonsense at the end. Has his stuff since them been better, or at least made more sense?

I really hope this gets some kind of a theatrical release in the US, it looks like something that really should be seen on a big screen.

According to this map (original found here), Godzilla Resurgence will be released in 100 countries including North America and the UK. I don't read Japanese, so maybe someone can help out. (Apparently, the countries in light yellow do not yet have a scheduled release.)

But will it be in theaters? I think most of the recent Japanese Godzilla movies were just direct to home video releases. The only one I know of that was released in theaters in the last 20 years was Millennium.

Tumblr translated the list.

This map from a newspaper article appears to reveal the identities of the 100 countries Godzilla Resurgence is confirmed to be distributed in. This list is incomplete, as not all numbers are accounted for and some territories will probably be confirmed later.
