toenails

I have two on the same foot I tried to clip, but it appears like the entire nail has started to peel off... it's all or nothing.
What should I do. If I peel off the entire nail, I risk serious infection, but at least a new nail will eventually grow. If I don't what will happen? Will; the old nail re-mend to the side again?

Thanks!!!!

Use a plaster then to make sure there's no infection and honestly do you not wear socks? if you wear a clean pair of socks why would it get infected? and if you bathe regularly why would it get infected?

Put a sticky plaster over it to tape it to your toe and just wait to see what happens. Replace the plaster as needed, obviously.

That way you wont risk catching it and tearing it off a little bit more whenever you put on some socks, for example.

If it heals back to reattach to your toe, it heals back. If it doesn't, let it grow out at it's own pace until it can be removed without risk of infection.

Also, it may be worth getting the advice of a Podiatrist too.

I come from a family of manicurists and my toenail did that once. What I was told to do is cut the nail down as far as you can without tearing or damaging the tissue. Then allow the nail to grow back out. Keep it clean. It might help to soak the foot in warm epsom salt then gently snip the nail down. It should grow back normally on its own. However a consult with a podiatrist couldnt hurt. :techman:

The nails of both my big toes were permanently removed over a decade ago. Sometimes I wish I'd had them take all 10...they serve no significant purpose anymore.

Well I thought mine on the big left toe was forever gone, but after 6 years, its finally started regrowing.

Seeing the podiatrist would be the best option.

Wait, wait, wait. Your toenails are just falling off?! I would think that's a sign of some sort of rather severe systemic health issue. Go to a doctor. :wtf:

Also, how long is a "long time" in terms of sock duration? Is it longer than a day? And if so why? :wtf:

Good luck with your toe nails, I hope they get better... but I have to admit I am terrified of toe nails, they make me cringe. I've read through this thread and I'm squirming now!! eeeeek!!

They generally grow back if they get ripped off. A friend of mine had a thumbnail ripped off in a block (lucky it didn't get his whole thumb!) and it's eventually regrown.

Sometimes I get something weird happen with my nails, where it's almost as though the nail gives up growing and a new one comes out on top of the old. But it does push the old one forward as it grows.

I don't know what that's about, but it means I often have this little ridge across my nail where one has decided to stop and regrow. When they do grow out, (say the last 4mm), the old nail will be loose and fall off, leaving me with a very short nail that's sore. :(

So last time I wanted to try and hold onto the old nail as long as possible, so I used super glue, and then buffed it down so it was smooth and fairly invisible. It works for me.
