I saw Apollo 11 last night.

I will say that I would have rather seen movie theatres maintain presentation standards (i.e., the screen was poorly masked, with the bottom edge noticeably curved), and leave the seating the way it is in live theatre and in concert halls, than upgrade the seating, and let presentation go to pot.

That said, it was visually far more impressive than Gibson and Coe's almost-half-century-old Footprints on the Moon, and they didn't take the shortcuts (e.g., using footage of an earlier Saturn V launch) Gibson and Coe needed in order to make it into theatres less than two months after the Moon Landing, but on the other hand, it lacked the warmth, of Footprints, and the music wasn't as good (Philip Moody's Laguna Concerto was a perfect match to the Apollo 11 visuals).

Saw it in IMAX and it was an amazing document. I loved that there was no voice-over; just the actual transmissions. I already have it pre-ordered on Blu-Ray; highly recommended!

Yes, it was definitely nice hearing Jack King calling the countdown without anybody else talking over him.

(Incidentally, that is the most obvious "tell" that indicates that Gibson and Coe used an earlier Saturn V launch [I used to know which one] as a shortcut: "Guidance internal" vs. "Guidance is internal."

Speaking of Saturn V launches, Assignment: Earth used the unmanned Apollo 4 launch, the only Saturn V launch prior to the episode's airdate, much less its production date.

Yeah, saw it last month and it's really quite amazing what they achieved. What really got me was how sharp the imagery was to the point that it really feels modern in some places rather than a throwback.

I just did a Google search (this thread was top when I filtered it to UK and the last week by the way) and discovered it comes out here on 28th June , finally. Given that the man behind it is from Britain - Sheffield to be precise, I should say it's about time. I know some of the scenes of the Saturn V's ascent from this doc were used in 'First Man' from the commentary track to that film.

Just watched it on my 60” 4K set and it was AMAZING. The large format archive film was beautiful. The launch was GORGEOUS. The images on the moon were so sharp and clear that they looked beautiful. I really enjoyed seeing images and events I’ve never seen before. Well worth the time and money. May get this one on Blu-ray.

That said, APOLLO 11 is out now on DVD (and Blue Ray for the folks who use that format), but I'm waiting for the price to go down before I get it. This months' DVD money went to the TIMELESS final episodes, and of course, bills......always bills.

Oh well, maybe next month.

Yep. Turns out you were referring to the 1989 documentary which I didn't know existed, but will definately check out, and I was referring to the miniseries coming out later this year on Apple TV and produced by Ron Moore (ugh) that is, in fact, alternate history.

I remember taping it when it was on late one night on BBC 1 for the 20th anniversary of Apollo 11. I lost count the number of times I watched it and I love the score - have it on DVD. However, whenever it was broadcast subsequently the score was changed about and having seen it so many times that I knew where each piece of music went, it threw me. As a result I haven't bought it on DVD/Blu-Ray, merely transferred my old VHS copy onto DVDR. Here's hoping that the version you're talking about has the score I remember from 1989. I notice its on Amazon twice so I'm assuming this is what you're talking about?

In the version I first saw back in '89, when the astronauts are entering the lift to take them up to their command module, one of the 'pad rats' is heard to say 'Haul ass guys.'. In the version I bought they say 'God speed men'.

A very graphic example is the music at the end of the version of For All Mankind I first saw had Eno's 'Deep Blue Day' as the end music, but in the version that I bought it was Eno's 'An Ending (Ascent)'. A really haunting piece of music which I really love but in the version I saw on the BBC, it's used sparingly. By the way, am I the only one who's ever seen that earlier version of 'For All Mankind'?

I taped it when it was first on and watched it god knows how many times over the next few years. I transferred it from VHS to DVDR a couple of years back, though I've never watched it as the quality would be cringeworthy.
