Today show to visit Doctor Who; Meredith Vieira to cameo

The Today Show segment apparently was broadcast this morning. Thanks to time zone differences I estimate we'll see it in the MST region sometime around 9:30 AM (but don't quote me on that).

Blogtor Who has posted links to NBC's online version of the segment. Spoilers in here. I mean, seriously - spoilers for the final episode of the first half because she actually reads part of the script aloud that gives away ... something ... and there is a clip from Episode 7, so beware:

This was cool - they showed all 11 Doctors, a bit of the 1963 opening sequence and also what appears to be some behind the scenes stuff from Confidential (unless a certain scientist from last season is coming back). There's also a second clip featuring Meredith's encounter with a couple of familiar baddies, too.

The current rumor is that this story seems to take place in an alternate timeline or universe, where the Roman Empire is ruled from Britain. As for why Churchill exists at the same time as Widescreen TV, perhaps technology moved at a faster pace because the Empire never collapsed. Not sure what the Silurian is doing there, perhaps they've made peace with the Silurians as well. Perhaps this is where Rory gets his new Centurion armor? Also I wonder what the Cybermen have to do with all this...they seem to have a habit of popping up in alternate universes lately.

It also features lots of Nazis. And inevitably yet another Voyager-style Reset Button.

I saw this this morning really neat that something DW related was featured on a mainstream program like Today. The typical Today Show viewer would hardly believe a show like Doctor Who exists let alone watch it.

Having had a chance to watch it now and assuming it's not all one big hoax, it really does look like the sort of mish-mash of mad ideas, crowbared in returning characters and gimmicky cameos that RTD used to get beated up about every year.

And far, far from the new and improved "dark and serious" show people were praising after the first two episodes.

Why are there alternate timelines open again? The Doctor mentioned it briefly in the previous episode. I thought they were sealed off?

For the same reason no one on Present Day Earth remembers Aliens are real anymore. The magic RTD continuity destroying Cracks.

How do we know they don't remember aliens? We only know Amy, and everything was restored from the crack.

I'm not going to hunt down quotes but Moffat has said in several interviews that people don't remeber aliens anymore thanks to the Cracks.

Well, that segment was a lot less cringe-worthy than I was afraid it would be. She actually gave some decent background on Doctor Who. I was surprised they let her film so many spoilers though.

edit: why are they interchanging United Kingdom, Britain, and England though?! D:

If by "they" you mean the production team and the BBC, I'm sure they made the sensible decision that the benefits of getting Doctor Who on the United State's most-watched morning show outweighed the revelation of a line of dialogue from an episode six months down the road. The more Americans who know about Doctor Who, the more people who might watch it on BBC America, the more ad revenue and DVD sales are possible. Marketing considerations do trump artistic considerations at times.

Well, Britain and England can be interchanged, as for interchanging them with the UK, chalk that upto ignorance, even I don't do that as the UK is England, Scotland, Wales AND Northern Ireland.

the universe was restored at the end of series 5

that makes no sense unless sarah jane, captain jack etc just disappeared too and there were still daleks around

I think you might be misinterpreting the quote. I know what you're talking about but he wasn't making a blanket statement otherwise he'd be sabotaging Torchwood and SJA. Not to mention his own ability to use the Daleks, UNIT, etc.

And in any event, Moffat could say the moon is made of cheese in Doctor Who. Who cares? It's not mentioned on screen. Case closed. If a future episode has someone like the Doctor say "no one remembers aliens anymore because of the Cracks" then OK. But there's nothing in The Big Bang or any episode since to support it. And in fact Day of the Moon (minor spoiler) establishes that Rory remembers his time as an Auton, and the Doctor remembers the events of The Eleventh Hour, so that pretty much ends that as far as I'm concerned.

Part of the problem is people don't understand computer technology. When you reboot your computer, does it delete everything stored on it? Does it forget how to connect to the Internet or run Word? Of course not. All that happens is it shuts down and starts up again, with status quo (except perhaps for some cache files deleted and fresh preferences). The universe was rebooted; that doesn't mean memories are lost. Otherwise there would have been a Gallifrey waiting for the Doctor (and he most likely would have looked like William Hartnell).

So was I, but then again there really wasn't anything here you wouldn't see in a Next Time trailer. There's nothing about the key elements of the show - the characters. They kept her away from Karen and Arthur, for example, so we don't find out what's up with them. All we know is that River Song is involved, and it was announced earlier that she was going to be a presence throughout the season, so no surprises there.

And most of the people watching had probably never even heard of the series let alone watched it. (Most of what we saw in that clip had already been known through Set Reports and Photos.)
