Yeah, basically, when I said "specific similarities": the Hero's Journey meme involves very vague, general descriptions of story beats. Many other stories using it have involved variously:

a) bowl-cut wearing kids who race and crash vehicles, b) the farm boy hero, c) mentors who d) tell the protagonist how awesome their dad was (which mentor is e) supplemented with a second older, pointy-eared mentor), f) launch into the adventure part of their story as part of a love triangle, g) featured a Laurel-and-Hardy style comic relief duo like Threepio and Artoo or Scotty and Keenser, h) featured single-environment planets including a Desert Planet and an Ice Planet, i) featured a Big Bad in a planet-killing space vessel, and j) featured the destruction of one of the protagonist's homeworlds as a setup for the final jeopardy . . .

Those are all separately items you could find in many stories. As a group of concepts though -- each of them a more specific versions of the general Hero's Journey beats -- they're an aggregate that is pretty much native to Star Wars (and recognizably so).

you're on a forum where people still enjoy debating the finer points of a nearly 50-year-old television show; the movies are around 5 years and 1 year old respectively. Even accounting for a potentially smaller window of likely interest in the latter-day films as opposed to the originating show, what do you think the average elapsed time is likely to be between a) your declaring the horse dead, and b) anyone involved in talking about it actually caring?

That's a "how many angels can dance on the head of a pin" type of question, I'm afraid. No matter how many dead horses are beaten, there will always be yet another dead horse and an adequate supply of sticks with which to beat it. It is the order of things.

I think it should pass to no one. Star Trek's been great, but it should end.

That's a possibility, too. And I get where you're coming from. (A lot of the ideas for blue-sky "reboots" that we occasionally bat around on the Future of Trek forum would, in all honesty, probably be better-served as simply new properties.)

OTOH I've learned not to count Trek out. A franchise that could recover from The Final Frontier has depths and lives unguessed-at even now. So, who knows?
