To seek out Trek books in the bargain bin...

Actually that was not my intention when I visited Border's tonight, but there it was in the bargain bin, a HUGE DS9 book. A relaunch book. I had started reading the relaunch books but drifted away. They were good but otehr things were happening and I'm more writer than reader. Anyway I had gotten to the Iconian book, and read that, but there was part of it that forced in another book but I didn't read that. Anyway I remember way back starting the Mission Gamma stories but I couldn't find one of them. anyway, tonight there was huge book called Haunted Seas and I had no idea when it took place.. I figured I hadn't kept on on the stories in a while and I'd be lost, but it was HUGE book with DS9 on the cover and it was 4 dollar.s To my pleasant surprise I learned it was the first two books of that Mission Gamma shindig, and since my move I'd lost track of what books I had anyway, I feel very about buying it.

First, can anyone fill me on Horn and Ivory and maybe give me a refresher course on these stories, it's been years. I remember clearly the Julian story called Abyss and other bits and pieces. can you help with a bit of important points before I start this/
Thanks.

Also what are the best deals you've had for Trek books.

The other good deal was about 5 years ago, in the bargain bin I found this book of Trek episode reviews -zero to four stars each. Can't remember the authors but they worked at a sci fi magazine and they also were the inspiration for the characters in free Enterprise. That was good book deal as well.

Tuln, are there any used bookstores in your area? You can generally get books at most used bookstores for $3-4ish, maybe even lower depending on where you are and how badly the proprieter wants to get rid of them. Condition is important; many Trek books have sat moldering away in boxes before the owner sells them to the used bookstore, but there are some bookstores who won't take them in bad condition. There is a nationwide chain called Half Price Bookstores, of which there is one in my area, who are nitpicky on the condition of their purchases from people selling their unwanted books, but conversely that means what you get from them is in good shape.

Just yesterday I found Myriad Universes: Infinity's Prism, Myriad Universes: Echoes and Refractions, Mirror Universes: Obsidian Alliances and Strange New Worlds 10 for $3.99 each in the bargain books section at my Borders. :bolian:

The only ST books I have seen in the bargain bin anywhere were two copies of 'Death in Winter' that were library copies, which were being sold at a Books-A-Million.

Must be spring cleaning time at the S&S warehouse...

A few months back, I found the TPB versions of SCE: Aftermath and Grand Designs for like $4 or $5 each at the local Borders. I've checked for more Trek every time I've gone since, but so far that's all I've found.

Spring, 1998. Dollar Tree. Virginia Center Commons. Glen Allen, Virginia.

The Ashes of Eden hardcover, for a dollar.

I already had it. I bought another anyway.

When did Half-Price get picky? When I used to live in an area with one, they took anything. That was one of their selling points as a business, that they would buy anything printed. They didn't pay a lot, but they did take everything.

Back in January, I was able to buy The Hand of Kahless and Millennium in the "hurt books" section of my local, independent bookstore, at 50% off. A total of 5 novels between the two titles for about $13.00(US).

(I'm assuming hurt books are the same as books from the bargain bin--do they have a mark on the bottom of the books, indicating that they are not to be sold at full price?)

At my local Barnes and Noble I got Star Trek Action for five dollars. I was really excited to get it and the Art of StarTrek book for a bargain price.

I've gotten Star Trek books at thrift stores, anywhere from 70 cents to $3, depending on the store and the condition of the book. Thrift stores often takes books that aren't in good enough condition for a used bookstore and sell them very inexpensively.

Of course, if you are looking for something specific, this isn't always a good option. I did acquire some of my favorite Diane Duane trek novels in thrift stores though. Many older trek novels can no longer be found in the local library.

I've gotten alot of the older Startrek books at used book stores for a good price. One I really wanted to find was Vulcan academy murders,Deep space nine the Millenium compedium. They had it and Spock's world. I also found Q-squared the last time I visited the used bookstore store.

I've been finding some of the older books... in some cases it's a gold mine!

Wish I was fortunate enough to find THS or something like ToF in there for 4 bucks!

I have at least a couple good SHB stores here... :)

Tho I wish I could find more SCE...

Is it OK to list web sites or is that against the rules? I'll try it and see - bookcloseouts.com. Search for 'star trek.' They have a pretty good selection and it does get updated rather frequently. I've purchased just about all of my hardcovers and trade paperbacks from them over the past few years including all of the rather recent Vulcan trilogy books and the anniversary short story collections - Constellations, Prophecy and Change, Sky's the Limit. I was especially lucky a couple of weeks ago. I've been trying to find a HC of After the Fall (NF) and happened to spot it there. There was only ONE copy left so I grabbed it.

Probably the best buy I ever got was the DS9 Companion at the sadly missed Media Play chain - $3.99!

Mike Farley, at least the Half Price in Omaha is picky (or was the two times I brought stuff in). There are numerous used bookstores in Omaha, though, so people don't really get too upset about having their books turned away, they will take them elsewhere. And it seems the HPB here has much of its inventory computerized, so they can easily tell if they have multiple copies of what you're trying to pawn off, anyway.
