If the new movie fails, it will have been the third one in a row to not meet expectations, so I doubt another movie would get a green light. Here's hoping it succeeds creatively and financially.

I hear ya.
If for no other reason than to keep the franchise breathing for the forseeable future. I can tolerate a shitty story or violations of continuity in the long run if the movie makes money and keeps Paramount interested.

I am seriously concerned that Abrahms' editing staff will slip on a banana peel and the movie will suck... concerns or not, there is no way in hell I'm going to miss this movie.
AMEN BROTHA! THIS FILM IS APOCRYPHAL AT BEST, AND A CANON-DESTROYER AT WORST. THE FRANCHISE WE LOVE BEGAN ERODING WHEN THEY KILLED SPOCK IN STII:TWOK, BUT WE LOVED SPOCK AND WANTED HIM BACK. SO WE TOLERATED THE SHARK-JUMPING METHOD BY WHICH HE WAS RESURRECTED IN STIII:TSFS, OTHERWISE IN WAS STILL A PRETTY GOOD MOVIE BUT WHICH HAD NO REAL PROPER ENDING. THEN STIV:TVH WAS A PRETTY DAMNED GOOD MOVIE, AND THEN IN STV:TFF, SHATNER TOOK US SHARK-JUMPING AGAIN BY HAVING THE GOOD SHIP ENTERPRISE AND HER CREW TRAVEL FROM EARTH TO THE CENTER OF THE GALAXY IN SEEMINGLY HOURS INSTEAD OF DECADES LIKE VOYAGER NEEDED FOR SUCH DISTANCES IN THE NEXT CENTURY. STVI:TUC WAS FULL OF FLAWS ON SO MANY LEVELS, INCLUDING THE STUPID METHOD BY WHICH THEY IMPROVISED A SENSOR TO DETECT THE PLASMA EXHAUST GAS FROM THE BIRD-OF-PREY. Quit smelling your own farts for a minute, will you? I wasn't even BORN yet when Spock died. As far as I'm concerned that was one of Trek's finest moments, possibly a turning point that transformed the entire future of the Trekiverse for the next ten years and beyond.
Everyone's entitled to their opinion, sure. But am I the only one here who keeps having this thought, "If you're so unhappy with what Star Trek is turning into, why don't you just stop watching it?" You still have your DVDs, your reruns, your vintage paraphanelia from the 60s and late 70s.
