To complete or not to complete

That singing... yikes. If they hadn't kept repeating it over and over, it might not have been so bad.

And to my ears, it sounded like William Hartnell kept pronouncing "Earp" as "Wurp".

Yes, he was calling him "Wurp." It's one of those intentional flubs written into the Doctor's dialogue because Hartnell flubbed his lines for real so often that it became part of the character.

Personally, I love "The Gunfighters" and I love how they just keep doing the song over & over again! A couple years ago, I went to an antique store and found a small saloon facade labeled "Last Chance Saloon" which just happened to be the perfect size as a backdrop for my 3" Doctor Who figurines from Titan. (Maybe I'll see if I can upload a picture.) :D

119 The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (McCoy)
146 Battlefield (McCoy)
163 Planet of Giants (Hartnell)
170 The Happiness Patrol (McCoy)
175 The Gunfighters (Hartnell)
177 Arc of Infinity (Davison)
180 Delta and the Bannermen (McCoy)
186 Dragonfire (McCoy)
193 Paradise Towers (McCoy)
196 Time-Flight (Davison)
198 Time and the Rani (McCoy)
199 Timelash (C Baker)
200 The Twin Dilemma (C Baker)

I don't care for "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy." When I think of bad McCoy overacting, I think of McCoy stuck in the cage.

"Battlefield" is brilliant! Honestly, it and "Remembrance of the Daleks" are the only 2 McCoy stories that I would save if his era was subject to a 1960s style wipe. There are a few hammy moments from McCoy but the villain is great, Ace is great, the Brigadier is always fun, and I hope they bring back Brigadier Bambera one of these days. (BTW, the actress playing Brigadier Bambera also played the female version of Lister in the Red Dwarf episode "Parallel Universe.")

"Planet of Giants" is fine. You really can't go wrong with the original cast.

"The Happiness Patrol" features the Kandyman, one of the damn weirdest things the show has ever done. The Doctor defeats him by spraying fizzy lemonade at his feet, making him stick to the floor.

"Arc of Infinity" is decent since it's the return of Omega and has some more Time Lord skullduggery.

"Delta & the Bannermen" is the worst thing to ever bear the Doctor Who name. The aliens are all annoying & badly designed and the romance between the biker & the alien princess makes no damn sense.

"Dragonfire" is a decent introduction for Ace but feels oppressively studio-bound. And the Part 1 cliffhanger where the Doctor is literally hanging off a cliff for no reason is just as baffling as its reputation suggests.

"Paradise Towers" is fine. One of the more competently executed McCoy stories if you ask me.

"Time-Flight" has the Master. That's good enough for me!

I haven't seen "Time & the Rani" in a long time but I don't recall it being anywhere near as bad as most people say.

"Timelash" is an interesting idea that would have been a lot better had they condensed it down to a single 45 minute episode. In order to stretch it out to a 2-parter, they had to add a lot of Doctor/Peri bickering. (And lord knows Season 22 needed more of that!)

I'm sure I've seen "The Twin Dilemma" all the way through at some point but damned if I can remember anything about it except for the Doctor trying to strangle Peri at the beginning.

Then I'm done - unless I suddenly decide the Sarah Jane Adventures are worth collecting. However, I've never seen any of those nor have I seen K9 and Company.

I've only seen the 1st season of The Sarah Jane Adventures and Matt Smith's crossover appearance in Season 4. I liked it OK. I'm not in any rush to finish the series but it's a solid kids show that manages to not talk down to its audience.

You do seem to get gouged on the price of the DVDs in the US.

No kidding. As I understand it, it's because a good chunk of the classic series is out of print in the U.S. Some stories can still be gotten for pretty low prices but others will cost you an arm & a leg. I think I paid about $50 a piece for "The Time Meddler," "Planet of the Spiders," & "Frontios." Currently, I'm missing 5 stories and the American Amazon prices are as follows:
"Kinda" $37.93
"Snakedance" $22.21
"The Awakening" $32.11
"The Happiness Patrol" $99.98
"The Curse of Fenric" $40.23

(Maybe I should jump on that "Curse of Fenric." I think that's the lowest that I've seen it in a while.)

Some other appallingly high prices for a single story on DVD:
"The War Games" $59.99 (down from $200 a few years ago)
"Image of the Fendahl" $64.98
"Arc of Infinity" $64.99
"Planet of Giants" $69.98
"The Invasion" $69.99 (down from $150 but still worth it!)
"The Horns of Nimon" $70.00
"The Hand of Fear" $78.41
"The Invisible Enemy/K-9 & Company" $79.99
"The Invasion of Time" $80.55
"City of Death" $87.63
"The Sensorites" $89.98
"Underworld" $99.98 (which is probably more than they spent on the FX for that story)
"Revelation of the Daleks" $102.67
"Planet of the Spiders" $119.98
"The Time Meddler" $125.90
"The Two Doctors" $149.97 is the lowest price offered by any 3rd party seller.
"The Web Planet" region 1 DVD is unavailable for any price!

Thank the gods I already have these! If I hadn't become a classic fan when I did, I would have been priced right out of the fandom.

It’s not so much that it’s disturbing...it’s that it’s also crass. Especially considering that single episode absolutely should have been the most kid friendly in all of who (monster designed by a blue peter winner...as opposed to a monster looking like it was designed by a blue peter winner. We had those in the sixties.) and instead it’s an out-of-formula approach, that absolutely could have worked (and works much better with Wilfs gang just a few years better) better than it did.

Torchwood also did a better take on the outsider-becomes-obsessed-with-our-heroes-and-then-gets-in-over-his-head in "Random Shoes."

Those prices are appalling! I got lucky several years ago when Amazon (Canadian Amazon, at least) had a sale on them. I got some of those you quote at $80 for less than $20 CAD.

You need to not a multi-region DVD player. I got one from EBay for $30 that works fine. Then You Can buy most of these on Region 2 DVDs drom the U.K. through EBay for $10-$15, some with free shipping.

The region 2 DVDs are also higher resolution than region 1 DVDs as they are PAL encoded rather than NTSC. Your TV also needs to support PAL playback at 625 lines and 50Hz if you go that route though. I think most modern HD TVs do but it's worth checking.
