To Aventine or NOT to Aventine?

^ That is exactly what I'm saying. I have no problem with her being presented as a good Captain, but it was jarring and annoying to have her presented as being as good as or better than Picard and Riker who have WAY more experience. Dax had no Starfleet Command track experience in any of her previous lives to draw on other than the few times Jadzia commanded the Defiant, at least not that I'm aware of.

1. Ezri herself would have received command track training in the years between Avatar and Destiny, including being there in the midst of more than a few interstellar crises.

2. Even if Ezri didn't have Starfleet Command track training (that we're aware of) in her previous lives, that's still a bloody hell of a lot of experience to draw upon!

3. She wasn't presented as being the equal in all ways of Picard and Riker, as evidenced by the varying reactions readers have had. She was simply presented as being different. Her style may have worked well in an immediate existential crisis situation, but who's to say how it would work in other situations?

To me Star Trek works best when the characters stay within character and also when those characters remain in the bounds of believability. Ezri as a captain was really pushing the envelop of believability for me. I just can't see her in command of anything even with her past lives experience. When I think of her character as portrayed on DS9 she just didn't have command presence. That's not to say that I didn't like her character because I do like Ezri the counselor. I just don't care for Ezri the captain.

Marco and KRAD gave a talk about the Destiny trilogy at Shore Leave last year. During the Q & A I asked if their would be an Aventine series and Marco said their were enough titles in publication already and Aventine would pop up from time to time in what would amount to a recurring role in the various lines or even stand alone books.
I personally would not mind an Aventine series. Unlike some others I always liked Ezri. I thought it was interesting to see a host who wasn't ready for it and how the transition was handled. It made for some interesting stories.
I also don't have a problem with the way Ezri made Captain or with her being a good one. She has leadership experience out the wazoo. Her first host was a political leader on Trill, and Jadzia was a C.O. during the Dominion War. Torias was a test pilot which gives serious experience thinking fast under stress. Curzon was a diplomat, which is useful in itself, but was also quite the swashbuckler giving plenty of useful life experience.
To me it seems people base their opinion of Ezri's command fitness by what they saw of her in season 7 of DS9, which I can understand if not agree with. She has had half a decade to figure out how to integrate her previous life experiences. That struggle was the central facet of her character during the season 7. She is well beyond that by the time she assumes command of the Aventine. Instead of a kid trying to integrate so many lifetimes into her unready personality, she has become a confidant and mature individual with tremendous experience to draw on.

I really don't think you're taking the ways she's changed as a character since "What You Leave Behind" into account.

ETA: I'm wrong. According to Memory Alpha, StarTrek.com lists Ezri Tigan's birthdate as 2354. That would make her 21 during DS9 Season Seven, 22 throughout the relaunch so far, and 27 when she assumed command of the Aventine in 2381. Picard was 28 when he assumed command of the Stargazer in 2333.

Bingo.

I really enjoyed the Destiny trilogy and I am excited about the upcoming Aventine books. The Vestra class sounds cool, and I think Ezri is HOT. She may seem young to be a captain, but Dax is very old. She has lifetimes of experience to call upon. I will definitely give it a try, and if the writing is good, I may keep reading it.

I think all the books should jump to Infinity A.D., where we learn all the characters -- living, dead, formerly dead, undead, and existing on higher planes of consciousness -- all lived happily ever after. Then we won't have to worry about any of this shit ever again.

But you would need to read Articles of the Federation first.
:guffaw:

Seconded on that reaction! If it weren't for the state of my lungs requiring a nigh-Vulcan level of self-control, that is...

I think Ezri is HOT.
Really, what else do you need to carry a novel series? ;)

Hey I said I would check it out and if the writing is good I would keep reading. There is nothing wrong with enjoying a hot female captain. I sure liked Erika Hernandez in Destiny. I'm sure lots of girls are hot for the male captains. I'm not saying looks are everything. Dax is a very interesting character in many ways.

I'm hot for girls with spots ok? ROFLMAO

Did you guys see Nicole de Boer on SG-A ?

I'll be content if the Aventine crops up once in a while so we see Bowers etc. I'm perfectly content with there not being an Aventine series.

Arguments about her ability to be a Capt. can go in circles, but I don't like her or her personality, but as it sounds like there are interesting things to come in Trek Lit that I want to read, it'll be better for me to get into them knowing it probably won't be Ezri mouthing off on every page.

A few days late to the thread I appreciate, but I really enjoyed the Aventine and Dax aspects of Destiny, so would definitely buy any more books that focused on them.

I'm about a third of the way through A Singular Destiny, and I'm very much enjoying the Aventine crew in this book. I think it's a fine bunch of characters.
