TNG's most absurd moments

^ Offenhouse was not quite down to that level. He didn't deserve the treatment he got.

To be concerned with money is not anywhere as offensive as slavery or sexism.

That being said, I find it comforting that Offenhouse was able to start a new life:

He is now Secretary of Commerce for the Federation

Are you kidding? The guy wakes up 300 years in the future and stubbornly tries to act like he's still in the 1980s. "My accoutnants are still in business! Get me the Wall Street Journal! I want to know what's happening! I don't care about the way you do things! I want things my way!"

He was acting like a little brat.

Well, to be fair, Offenhouse was very much out of his element. You couldn't really expect him to do anything other than immediately try to resume his career. He woke up 400 years in the future, how was he supposed to know things would be so different? He didn't have time to adjust.

Picard, OTOH, did not have to be so smug. And as has been pointed out, *greed* may have been largely eliminated, but obviously money cannot be. (The Federation *does* have credits.) Picard could have been more tactful.

It's not only that Picard is smug, the whole B-plot with the 20th century Humans is condescending.

SFDebris said it best....

The pomposity of the first season is sickening. You've got a musician, a housewife and a stockbroker (or venture capitalist, whatever he is) and Riker regards them like the scum of humanity. He wonders how we survived the 20th century based on these three?! Given all the OTHER things we've survived?!

Is that really what Trek is telling us? Yeah, forget slavery. Don't mention death camps. Don't bother about female circumcision. Never mind suicide bombers. Give up mass human sacrifice. Choke down your pleas about cannibalism. And forget about torture chambers. If you want to talk about irredeemable human barbarism, look to 1980s America! We'll take Hitler's Final Solution, Jackson's Trail of Tears and Stalin's purgings, thank you very much! - long before we go back to an era of greedy Wall Street investors and drug abusing country music singers!
There's two reasons I really, really disperse this bit [when Picard tells Offenhouse how humanity has grown out of its infancy].

One is that you can put just about any agenda into what Picard says and have it make just as much sense because it's based on a presumed social transformation. Suppose you wanted to preach puritanical ideas about sex. Just a few words changes and finishing up by saying that we've grown out of our adolescence, and it would be EXACTLY the same argument. It is towering arrogance to presume that growing up means adhering to your own personal values.

But even worse is how hypocritical this message is. If your a Marxist, that's your business. If you want to preach Marxism, knock yourself out. But the price of the TNG DVDs were astronomical. I have a real problem with shelling out that kind money to acquire something that says it's infantile to acquire things. That seems a little hypocritical, don't you think? It's fine that they wanted more money for themselves, but I despise people who preach their tirade against money and then discuss how their going to get more money for themselves!

Finally, Gene himself wasn't immune to this. Not only did he want his share of Star Trek, he wanted other people's shares to. Did you know there are lyrics to the TOS theme song? Gene wrote lyrics, without the intention of ever using them, to that theme song because in so doing he'd get a share of the royalties for the theme - a share taken out of the pocket of the actual composer, I might add. Ripping off a composer who's trying to make a living is bad enough, but then using the show to preach your Marxist agenda is just adding a whole new dimension of being a douchbag.

And yet, what a perfect allegory for 20th century communism, huh? You rip off the guy who is doing the actual work and all the while talk about communist doctrine. Kodos, Gene!

So remember folks, people who like to acquire things are pure evil.

No, I mean, military officers aren't allowed to play video games? Don't tell the official Korean Air Force StarCraft team that.

They're already allowed to play video games, it's the holodeck. And any time we see someone addicted to it (by someone I mean Barclay), bad things happen.

The lame humour derived by the senior staff for Picard being enthusiastic about horseriding and owning his own saddle.

Data's "Jenna program"...That was insane, I think "In Theory" would have been much better had Data tried to date her as himself and with observations made from his comrades. The whole textbook stuff is cringeworthy.

Yeah, he read up to get some advice and also kept all the information in one place. What was he thinking?

And that leads me to a very crude joke...

"You, I heard you like pussy, so I put a ...."

I don't think I'll finish that...

That reminds me of the time Crusher was verbally berating Q, so he turns her into a dog (we can assume female), and changes her back, with Crusher continuing on and not knowing she was turned into a dog. I can't decide if it's clever or crude, but seeing how it's Q...

William O. Campbell getting into Teri Hatcher's pants.

Not just her, but everybody swooning over Okona's supposed charm when he's one of the most irritating characters Trek ever put on screen. Even being the most irritating guest star in that episode is quite an accomplishment.

Heh, too true. I like Billy Campbell and I like Teri Hatcher, but I kept looking at Okona and thinking, "I don't get it. I simply just don't get why everyone's in love with him."

Interesting bit of trivia...he supposedly was in the running to play Riker but lost out to Frakes.

^ He would've been to smarmy compared to Frakes for that role. I'm glad he didn't make the cut.

A "fully functional" android............

I mean, OMG! WHY?!?!
Because Dr. Soong wanted Data to experience all aspects of being human, including sexual. He had hopes that he'd keep progressing and eventually be ready for an emotion chip, to bring him that much closer to being human. Without being outfitted completely with his sexual identity, that of a male, he'd be falling short... it's basically that simple.
