tng to voyager confusion

as quite a few dispassionate trek viewers have stated here, VOY is no better or worse than TNG in terms of canon trip ups. but, with TNG being the first out of the gate it gets a pass from many of you. i don't know if they're still there, but youtube has plenty of videos on TNG self-contradictions.
In all fairness TNG had less on-screen cannon to worry about adhering to where as Voyager had a lot more. One came considerably later than the other... so that makes sense. I don't think TNG "gets a pass" I think there's just less of it and the examples that do exist aren't so huge as episodes like Threshold. Violation of previously established cannon isn't my big beef with Voyager though.

Violation of its own cannon and lack of attention to detail as the show progresses is what brings me to red alert.

Voyager's careless writing bothered me at first. Then I decided I'd turn off my brain and just enjoy watching Janeway shoot stuff. Now I like the show a lot.

yeah, i definitely like that janeway is all "shoot now and let god sort 'em out" and that she's involved in all of the away missions. plus her voice sounds like she's purring.

I find it interesting to see what you think of Voyager, Data Lover. Like you, I was all TNG all the way for many, many years. I only started watching Voyager recently. I'm about 2/3 of the way through season 4 now. I hope you'll continue sharing your thoughts as you go.

Well, if we scared off all the fresh meat in the first week we'd have nothing to tear to shreds in the future. No, we'll let you grow plump first and turn nasty after you reach the rank of captain. ;)

Welcome to the board. :D

TNG was far from perfect, to be sure. But I've always thought (and I think there's a broad consensus on this...) that TNG didn't have nearly as many flaws as VOY -- in creation or implementation. And VOY doesn't pay attention to itself as much as TNG (or DS9) did.

I like a lot of VOY so I'm not trying to bash it....just wanted to echo the sentiment made earlier that she (the OP) can't expect VOY to be like TNG....especially right out of the gate.

datalover: VOY doesn't "grow" like TNG but it does improve after its first couple seasons for the most part IMO (and a lot of people disagree with that too...they'll say it just became different, not so much better), but you have to be able to get there first without quitting on it...and you have to forgive some glaring problems along the way.

But if you can just take VOY on its own terms, it's an enjoyable show because there's some good Trek in there. I've recently been rewatching some of my favorite VOY....hope you end up liking it too.

But we can't.

It was season 8 TNG.

There was some expectations if you regard the child as a refectionof the parent.

Which means that Enterprise as season 15 TNG, should have been the most magnificent thing ever, however as season 8 Voyager it's basically salted porridge when you're hanking for flan and cream.

what do you mean, Guy?

you can't take VOY on its own terms from the outset b/c of TNG?

or you can't enjoy VOY as it unfolds because it didn't meet the expectation level that TNG set for you?

what do you mean by Season 8 TNG, etc?

The first season of Voyager was staffed with a production crew who masterfully knew how to produce this product and some of them had been doing it already for many years on tng or ds9. Some we must suspect, seamlessly graduated/migrated from TNG to Voyager without pause for transition. For some making the show, and some watching the show Voyagers freshman year was more like reincarnation than birth as if the cast of TNG had just had head swap diets and the ship had gone on a diet, and ditto for enterprise 7 years later.

I missed the first season of NCIS. I found the lead girl annoying. Started a thriving interest when McGee came on board because, well he just looked like like DeNozo was going to propel him into a clock tower with a machine gun... So the shows into it's 6th year and I go back to examine the beginning... What the FUCK is that tubby bastard from JAG doing in the interrogation room? He's the same character... GODS! It's a spinnoff! I hate JAG. I loath Jag, Katherine Bell is pretty enough that I've molested my TV more than once despite electrical risk, but JAG makes me wish my kidneys would turn off and emmigrate. It's almost the opposite problem I have the new LA show where Everyone is Fonzie... In JAG, everyone was Richie.

okay, just finished non-sequitur where harry gets sent back to the alternate timeline where he's 1. with his fiancee 2. has a sweet job and 3. isn't stuck in the delta quadrant. why the hell was he in such a tizzy to go back? i wonder if he would have been so quick to pop back to the voyager if he knew he'd never rise above the rank of ensign for the next 6 years. plus, it's not like the people on voyager cease to exist, did he really think they were going to get back so much quicker with him on board? so far, all i have seen kim do is get abducted and lost.

Yeah, I dunno. I guess he had grown attached to the crew, or Tom's development meant THAT much to him or something.

Personally, I'm with you. I don't see how his disposition is that strongly affected by Voyager since all he does (ever, throughout the show) is be Janeway's bitch and go on really dangerous missions and almost (or occasionally actually) die. And get mocked by Tom for being such a putz now and again. Oh, and get locked out of the computer, that happens a lot too.

Perhaps, in contrast to his dear Captain, cares about not screwing with the timeline.

Or not, since he manipulated it himself in another episode, so I'd go with the care for the crew.

HAHAHA watching the next episode with the space item that's causing an implosion on the ship...janeway sitting straight up and going all helen keller....

"IT'S....TALKING....TO....MEEEE!"

hilarious.

Alternatively, Harry wants to come back because he knows its not fair to his old friend Danny Bird, to strand him in the Delta Quadrant. Yes, he's home, he's with Libby and he has a great job... and his conscience won't let him stay and enjoy it. Not just won't let him enjoy it, it won't let him change his new best friend's life for the worst.

KIM: You also told me you were afraid of what would happen to you if you didn't take Captain Janeway up on her offer. Now I see why.
PARIS: What do you see, Ensign?
KIM: A loser and a drunk. I guess in this reality, that's all you'll ever be.

Harry may have been "a putz" to Tom (like McGee is to DiNuzzo), but he was instrumental in saving everyone in season 4's "The Killing Game", season 5's "Timeless", & season 7's "Workforce", and in saving Tom in season 3's "The Chute" and B'Elanna in season 6's "Muse".

Cosmo was calling what Kim was playing with "timestreams" which to me sounds like the entire universe is being switched for another from the nuts and bolts up rather than time is just rerouted.
