TNG season one is hilariously excellent

I'm rewatching S1 at the moment (only just restarted, so only up to Where No One Has Gone Before). I think it's a very good season in many respects. There's a willingness to play around with ideas, roles and concepts that naturally faded by later seasons as things became more set in stone. I like the experimental nature of some of these early episodes.

Sometimes they fall flat, but even then, the ideas persist. Good season.

I'm doing the same thing, even though I got up to The Battle last night. I decided I haven't seen TNG in a long while and wanted to restart the series and go through it again.

One thing I'm noticing is how Grumpy Picard seems. Episodes like Lonely Among us and The Battle (Of course he was going through headaches from the device so that's excusable) he seemed like a cermudgon. Really looking forward to Season 3 where it seemed like Picard calmed down while still kicking a ton of ass.

I'm also noticing the point a lot of Anti-TNG folks are making in terms of the crew's arrogence. Granted, I think some of the species deserved it (Like the Antegans and that other race from that same episode) but I am glad they toned things down even in Season 2. Still, when Season 3 comes, I've got a feeling I will love it all over again (That will always be the case as TNG is the series I grew up on and still love, even over DS9). Still, these early episodes are worth going through again.
