TNG Returns!

Legit been wondering, assuming Worf shows up, I wonder if they will make him Nu-Trek bald klingon or look just like Worf.

This is very good news! TNG and Picard are what got me into Trek, and I've been fan ever since (of all the incarnations). Watching Picard once more on screen, well, that is a dream coming true! The next dream is probably to hope that it takes off so well, that they don't limit it to a mini-series but make it a full-fledged 7 season show!

...why would anyone expect that a whole new creative team would be involved in this project?

I would expect a new creative team to be brought on if there was a mandate on high to produce alternative programming for Trek fans who don't like Discovery. If creative decisions made in Discovery are a function of the creative team, creating another show around Picard will still likely mean a lot of the same questionable decisions will leak into that show. A casting decision by itself won't solve that problem.

If people aren't subbing to CBS All Access because they don't like Discovery, producing another show that shares all of the stylistic hallmarks of Discovery won't be enough to bring the stragglers in.

The Academy Idea is a kind of easy way to go and I wouldn't be shocked if they did it but what if they went the "West Wing" idea instead and he is president of the Federation.

That could be quite interesting. We haven't seen Trek from that perspective before.

I think the predictions should be based on what might be stimulating to Stewart as an actor. So the scenario has to provide him with as much of a platform to emote as possible. Action plotting doesn't do that, so it looks like the show will be more static in nature, whether he's a beaurocrat or dealing with civilian life (another angle in Trek that's rarely explored).

I'm delighted he is coming back. I've been smiling all day like a school boy who had his first kiss.

For over 10 years we've had this bullshit idea that Star Trek has to be fast and full of action. But finally a character who is not all about running around who represents the ideals of humanity in a time when they are being tested has returned to bring a sense of refinement and intelligence back to it. I know some people don't trust CBS but 'Picard' is not a young character, I believe this is not going to be a show in any shape or form like Discovery. It couldn't be.
Nemesis was a disaster note to leave Picard on. This series will give Picard justice.

Now when is Shatner coming back?

The Klingons are my one big concern. I don't want anymore Disco Klingons. If they do another change they should feel more in line with what we saw on TNG,DS9 etc and any differences can be explained away in head canon.

Jason
Even if they simply just add some amount of hair (be it facial, top of head, anything) to the current DSC look, I'd be completely fine with them. To me, it's the complete lack of hair more than anything else that makes the DSC Klingons look not-very-Klingon-like.

EDIT:
looks like you beat me to it:

Nu Klingon with classic hair.
You know you want to see it.

I think it would be interesting to see Picard as the Federation ambassador to a crippled Romulan Star Empire largely dependent on the Federation for survival. After almost three centuries of intermittent hostility between the two powers, can you imagine how much the famously arrogant Romulans would resent relying on a former enemy? There'd be "MAKE THE EMPIRE GREAT AGAIN!" demagogues popping up left, right and centre - perfect for Star Trek to comment on our current political situation more eloquently than Discovery's 'Remain Klingon!' nonsense ever could.

I agree a lot with your ultimate point, though I got to say, there's Jean-Luc Picard of TNG and Generations and then there's Jean-McClane Picard of First Contact, Insurrection, and Nemesis. Before the Abrams films the action was ratcheted up for the TNG films and Picard was turned into a more action-oriented character. And the TNG movies did put more action into them than typical TNG shows, which makes sense since they are films and have more money and a bigger arena to play in.

Definitely agree that Nemesis leaves a lot to be desired and wasn't the best way to wrap up the TNG series, so I am hoping that this Picard series gives TNG a proper ending. I also hope we get more TNG characters, and also check in on DS9 and VOY characters as well. This is a great opportunity to close out the 24th century era of Trek if they do it right.

I would like to see Riker and Troi on Titan, Geordi as captain of the Challenger, and that Captain Worf series as well. A nod to "All Good Things" with Crusher as a captain, but also having been married to Picard would be sweet as well.

I wonder if the Picard series will acknowledge the destruction of Romulus, from Trek '09? With Kurtzman onboard I'm guessing it will.

It they do decide to go the route of a Starfleet Academy series with this new show...when we last saw Miles O'Brien in the DS9 finale, he was going to accept a position teaching at the Academy. I kind of like the idea of O'Brien being a background supporting character as a professor at the Academy, like how he got his start as a supporting character way back on TNG.

Picard is to old now to be a believable action character. This really interests me more than Discovery, but so much depends on what they plan on doing with the character of Picard and who else they bring aboard the show.

He was never supposed to be an action character in the first place. He wasn't supposed to go on away missions, remember? It doesn't take much physicality to say "fire phasers" from the comfort of a seated captain's chair.

Point being, if they really wanted it to be an action show, they could, and not need a lot of rationalizations for Stewart not running around like Rambo.

I’m curious if they will ignore the Irrimotic Syndrome or use it.

I think it would be great if the premise of the show was, Picard had accepted his illness and resigned to slowly losing his mind, but then they come out with a cure, and now suddenly he has possibly decades of healthy years in front of them again and no idea what to do with them. A second chance to start another life, have a family.

Or maybe they want to give Trekkies more reasons to stick around when DISCO isn't airing. As opposed to only signing up long enough to watch DISCO and then cancelling their subscriptions until the next season comes along. (Which, I confess, is what I've been doing.)

My point being is that it's probably a mistake to see this as an anti-DISCO thing. What it actually looks like is that DISCO is doing well enough for CBS.AA that they want to expand on their TREK programming, and that the Picard show and the one-shots are intended to fill the gaps between DISCO's seasons.

Meanwhile, on other fronts, I watched the footage from Las Vegas and, boy, does Stewart look good for a man his age. He seems to be in great shape!
