TNG-R, Which model will they use?

the only thing i'm really curios about is what about the "ship of the week?" that was always stock footage of Excelsior? will it still always be the Excelsior or will we get cgi inserts of more varying arrays of ships?

Sounds to me like the Excelsior stock footage we've seen ad infinitum will be the same stock footage we'll be seeing yet again, only this time in high-def.

So what we all need to do is, when we see the shot of the U.S.S. Hood in EAF, we all need to bitch to CBS about how shitty it looks even in HD (even if it looks awesome), and that they seriously need to consider spending the tons of money they're making with CSI and Two and a Half Men, and put it toward all new CGI VFX.:p

... not a random bunch of damaged model kit quality ships.

Sorry - those models and that graveyard was the most fucking awesome thing ever done on TV Star Trek. :p

Yes, because fan bitching worked so well with TOS-R.

the battle of Wolf 359 aftermath scene redone to show more of the Constitution refit ship or just show more ships and in a more clear detail and not a random bunch of damaged model kit quality ships :)
Actually, I'd be happy if they didn't replace *any* of the Wolf 359 footage, and just rescanned the originals. Then we would have a much clearer view of just what exactly they put in those scenes.

Yeah... the most frustrating part of that was squinting, trying to figure out what the heck each of those blurry blobby shapes was supposed to be. :)

Totally. It gave us at the Wolf 359 research group years of enjoyment each time we uncovered new photos and facts about that scene!

Sigh. Have you no sense of humor at all, man?;)

Well, besides the stuff we already know, there's some far background wreckage...and I'm still looking for that shuttle Kotoi...

Same deal with the surplus depot in "Unification." I'd love to have a clearer image of the far background ships in that scene.

ooh, and they can add more quirky characters in mos eisley, and windows in cloud city! erm, wait...

I think no amount of bitching will see them spending the huge amount of money it would require to completely redo all the effects shots in 170+ episodes of TNG in HD format. They're only releasing this 3 part taster to see if anyone will still buy this stuff again on yet another format. They are running a business, and the less they spend in cleaning it up for transfer the more profit they make. CGI has made certain things easier and cleaner to do, but not necessarily faster and certainly not cheaper.

^Well, they are interested in making the product more marketable for syndication purposes as well. TV stations are much more inclined to license a program in HD for re-runs.

They're gonna have to do some CGI, to replace the purely video effects (shields, phasers, that dumb energy beam in EaF that was supposed to come from the phasers but instead looks to be coming from the captain's yacht).

Oh, yeah, that video "pixie dust" effect looking like Tinkerbell farted. :wtf: I had forgotten that optical...and I wish it had remained forgotten. ;)

Sincerely,

Bill

They are only inclined to license HD if the cost is cheaper than or perhaps equal to SD. For syndicated stuff, especially the older programs, I don't believe there is a detectable push from the viewers as to SD vs HD. The television stations I worked for didn't get TOS-Remastered in HD at first. They didn't care, either. All they worried about was cost vs viewers-- and this was CBS!

The Axeman is correct on the point that success of this project rests on the profits from Home Video Sales, and, as such, there will be a limit to how much they will clean up. If there is any effect to television station sales packages, it -might- give a boost in that a station might buy a run in the hopes people will tune in for the freshy freshy. But, these are still programs that run overnight, on weekend morning, etc. They're not high-revenue generating shows.

That's the beauty of boards like this. Someone will inevitably remind you of something you spent years blocking out.

I think any remastering like this should be an all or nothing thing. So if they do it, all the effects will look as good as they possibly can.
