I must admit I'm a bit confused because I've seen a few people on here comment on how much they disliked the TNG movies, and I don't understand why.
Okay Insurrection was on the dull side, and Nemesis wasn't great. However, I loved Generations. And First Contact is my favourite Trek movie of all. And I kind of thought that was the general concensus of them.
So why the dislike over TNG films in general? This isn't meant to be an argument thread by the way. I like the TNG films. I'm just curious as to why those few people don't...
Here's my reasoning about the TNG films
Generations:
When I first saw it, it was literally just 6 months after TNG ended. It was more like a season 8 premier for me, than a movie, because at that time I counted on TNG having at least 6 films, like the TOS cast did. Then when I heard it was going to have Kirk, well, what was not to like? But man, when the E-D was destroyed and Kirk was killed stupidly, plus Data gaining an emotion chip that destroyed his character, I walked away from Generations very disappointed. Now years after the release, and after the other sequels, I am at a point where I am OK with Generations, but all through the 90s, I hated it.
First Contact:
Not going to spend a lot of time on it, because not only is this my favorite TNG movie, it is one of my favorite Trek movies.
Insurrection
More of a two parter TNG episode than a movie, it just seemed unworthy of the big screen. I don't hate the movie, just sort of meh on it. It had great visuals, particularly the Big E battle in the Briar Patch, but it's attempts at humor just totally sagged. Especially Picard wearing a stupid dread lock hat, and the hms pinafore shuttlecraft scene with Data, Picard, and Worf.
Nemesis
This one was the one that TNG went out on, and went out with a whimper. Visually, it was probably the best TNG film, especially the space battle scene at the end. But a clone of Picard, who doesn't even look like Picard? Yet another Data twin? Nosferatu Remans? But the worst part is it's plot aped TWOK a little too closely for my liking, particularly killing Data. These days, I don't mind Nemesis so much, but I still look at it as a lot of missed opportunities.
