My only compliant was Nog going from engineering to security, unless he went back and got training in security.

we know he did some soldiering in the Dominion War, and most modern services require that their MPs or whatever do two or three years in another branch first - conveniently there's an article on that very subject in the latest Star Trek Magazine...

Is the Stormcrow supposed to be a Mogai-class (Valdore) or was there a new type of ship called the Valdore-class with a brand new Valdore?

The former - Judging by the information online about it, and the designations used, I think Valdore is probably the Starfleet designation for it. (the way that the west had different names for WW2 japanese aircraft types or Soviet stuff than the Japanese and Soviets did.)

And, before anyone asks, yes Tomalak's Fist is meant to be the ship from the 2011 SOTL calendar.

Right. Chekov, Worf, and Tuvok all transferred to security from other departments, so it always surprises me when people react to something like Ranul Keru or Harry Kim moving to security as if it were unprecedented.

Right. Chekov, Worf, and Tuvok all transferred to security from other departments, so it always surprises me when people react to something like Ranul Keru or Harry Kim moving to security as if it were unprecedented.

And O'Brien transferred from Tactical to Engineering. I just watch The Wounded the other day, and they made a refence to O'Brien being Maxwell's former Tactical Officer.

Or rather, from tactical to flight control to engineering. He was the battle bridge conn officer in "Encounter at Farpoint."

I'm just over half-way through the book. I have to say, I don't find it as engaging as I was hoping it would be. I found all of the frequent jumping between the Challenger, Intrepid and other ships a bit jarring for some reason. I also couldn't help but roll my eyes a little at the sheer amount of Small Universe Syndrome going on here. The novel really has felt like some sort of TNG guest star all-star reunion or something (Guinan, Scotty, Leah, Barclay, Ogowa, Rasmussen, Bok). I still have yet to understand why Guinan is aboard (but I suspect by the end of the novel it will make more sense), and I don't see any need to have brought in Barclay and Ogowa when they were already playing roles in other series (VOY and TTN).

Anyways, the book isn't a bad read, but I just am not really sure where the plot is going and it feels a little sloppy in execution. Once I've actually finished the novel, however, my opinion may change and things might work out much better.

Wow, you guys finished reading and I haven't even got it yet! Can't find the ebook in the Kobo store(do they even get star trek novels anymore??) and I can't even find a paperback copy at the local book stores.

^ Either order from amazon.ca or go up to the people in the bookstore and ask them to order it for you. It always weirds me out when people complain about this sort of thing; it's their JOB to do that for you.

To be honest if felt like it was written by somebody with a Dr. Who background. I'm not a big fan of Dr. Who and its style, but that is my problem.

I definitely noticed the 'originally two books' thing (which is hard to miss) but I quite enjoyed the book. Glad Geordi got his due.

I find Scotty was mistreated on a technicality they could have used since he came out of Transporter stasis or before he became the SCE head. All just to make Geordi a Captain

I think you're misinterpreting that.

There are fitness requirements for military positions today and if you're not fit enough to do the job, then you're not fit enough to do the job. Nog was actually second in line for the center seat after Hunt's death, but Scotty believed that Geordi would be better suited as Nog was still too young and actually had talent in security.
