@May 20 I did! It’s one of my few favs from the first season.

“The USS Lollipop. It’s a good ship.”

Also really liked the scenes where Beverly was “doctoring” Picard.

The others being Datalore and Heart Of Glory.
I have nostalgia for those. I guess if you miss out on it, then it's harder to get through, but I don't really feel all those are as bad as what people say. Those episodes still provided something fans wanted. As it got better it built on record viewership with even more viewership. The only trek that has done so regardless of quality.

I'm glad you came to it though, and are seeing the good sides. It's shockingly old now, but it holds up better than TOS did in it's first 37 years. Have fun.

Hey, all. I've been here 17 days so far, and I just noticed this thread. So with that in mind, here's some thoughts about me and TNG, past and present...

I was 7 years old when the show started, and there were only 2 reasons I knew it was part of a bigger franchise. First, I had some extremely vague memories of the 1960s show being shown in reruns; my older cousin watched them late at night. But I was so young, I can't even tell you now what those early experiences were about. Second, I had seen both The Search For Spock and The Voyage Home on VHS, so that was my main frame of reference. When I learned of the new show, my reaction wasn't the same as older people. I didn't think, "Oh, here comes a second Star Trek show!" Instead, my response was along the lines of, "Hey, I remember some of those movies. Now they're bringing it to TV? Cool!"

I don't recall being disappointed over the pilot though, after realizing most of the original cast wasn't in it. Like I said, I was just so very young, and my impressionable mind just absorbed it like a sponge without much resistance. So I was able to appreciate TNG on its own merits, instead of making a lot of comparisons. My uncle and I watched almost every episode during the first run...and while I enjoyed it, I didn't fully grasp the allegories and such until years afterward. I still like the bulk of the show, though I will admit there's a handful of episodes which irritate me a bit. But overall, if I had to rate the entire program from 1 to 10, I'd probably give it a solid 8.

HI... super new lol..... been bingeing the new ones and after SNW I was gonna check out Piccard but as i discovered i had gaps in my knowledge so i figured I better finally finish TNG.
currently on S01E11 Haven.... is that a wikkid young T-Bag (Robert Knepper- I ALWAYS see him as Bagwell from Prison Break, truely one of the most disturbing people on TV lol.........
looking forward to more Q knowledge lol De Lancie is a brilliant actor in all he does!

Good call. Picard will definitely more impactful if you have TNG under your belt. Honestly, Voyager too (both for Picard stuff AND you get some more Q!). The last TNG movie, Nemesis is also kind of important.

Parts of Star Trek 2009 are important too... but if you haven't seen it you can skip it, it covers what you would need to know anyway.

im floating between here and Fandom..... got knowledge of where I should look for a crash course in cannon & timeline? lol

Im totally in a wormhole at Warp 10 hahahaha.... GOING PLAID! lmao

I love it. (watch DS9. It's good, especially later on.)

Trek canon is expansive, but fairly easy to manage all things considered. The REAL short version of timeline by show/movie.

Enterprise - 2150's

Discovery - Seasons 1 and 2 - 2250's
SNW - later 2250's/early 2260's

TOS - 2260's (with DSC/SNW, perhaps take much of TOS with a grain of salt, more in the "events happened" but kind of fudge everything else)
TAS - 2260's (was not considered canon for decades but apparently is now. Not a fan myself.)

The Motion Picture (actual timeframe not exactly known, probably early 2270's)
The Wrath of Khan (also actual dates not known, likely later 2270's/early 2280's)
ST3-6 - Continues on from Wrath of Khan, ST6 wraps up in the 2290s.

(This is where it can get mildly confusing)
TNG - 2360's
Generations - Shortly after TNG finale, DS9 well into its run.
First Contact - Around the beginning of Season 5 of DS9
DS9 - Begins around TNG Season 4, goes into the 2370's
Insurrection - Occurs very late in DS9's run, probably like Season 6/7.
VOY - Begins like halfway through DS9, goes into the late 2370's.
Nemesis - Takes place after everything in the pre-Modern Era.

Lower Decks - Takes place right around the time of Nemesis-ish.
Prodigy - 2380's

*Star Trek 09 - References events that take place in 2387 which are critical to Picard, but otherwise is an alternate universe/timeline.
*Into Darkness and Beyond - Continues alternate universe from ST09, takes place in the DSC/SNW/TOS timeframe

Picard - S1 is 2399.

Discovery Seasons 3-5: 32nd century.

MOST Star Trek does not really require previous knowledge of anything. Picard leans the most into that, and definitely relies on having knowledge of TNG and Nemesis, and having knowledge of Voyager will be more impactful as well. Picard Season 2 might benefit from watching the DS9 episode "Past Tense" but... like... it's really more just for some small details that aren't actually important.

Yeah so Future-Pike time travelled from sometime in an alternate "Movie-Era", somewhere between ST2 and ST6. The point of all that was that Pike needs to suffer the accident that he knows will happen to him, or else a series of events will occur that leads to a devastating war with the Romulans.

That timeline is very rough, and there are times in episodes where they time travel/otherwise see another point in time, but the episodes are pretty deliberate about telling you what's happening. There is an episode on DS9... one of my all time favorites... where they travel back in time to the TOS-era.

Nearly all of Picard Season 2 takes place in 2025... there's a weird Voyager episode that takes place in 1999.

Star Trek does time travel quite a bit.

yea the space travel more common than i initially thought..... surely its illegal ... another thing to the search list lol... youve been down right helpful!!!

I think im suffering a little going from SNW to TNG.... TNG kinda slow? compared to Disc & SNW, kinda wish id watched it back in the day, it wouldda been thrilling.... its also a little to sexy? lol

That's an easy enough run down...

Spock has been trying to make peace with the Romulans since TNG (keep watching, you'll see.)

The Romulans discover their star is going to explode. Spock and the Vulcans in general want to help, and they think they developed a way to stop it or at least minimize the damage. (Not mentioned in the movie, Picard is heavily involved in all of this as well.)

Spock does not to Romulus in time, the star goes supernova, Romulus is destroyed. Spock DOES however use "Red Matter" to at least stop it from going any further, which causes a weird space-time hole... thing.

Eric Bana, a Romulan named Nero, happened to be right there when it all happened. Having just seen his homeworld be destroyed, he attacks Spock... blaming him and the Vulcans for the whole thing.

They end up getting sucked into the space-time thing... and... Star Trek '09 happens.

TNG is a different kind of TV to SNW. It does get better... the first 2 seasons are kind of meh... but TNG especially is NOT action-heavy. DS9 and VOY get alittle bit more, but it's still just an entirely different sort of TV to newer stuff.

Red Matter, yea yea yea, got it AND its that closes my circle on my Spock reasoning Pike musnt write the letters... im not gonna say HAS to have the accident cause well we dont know what these guys might do lol
hmmm, when did Vulcan blow up? it did yea? lol.... on the list ha!

is there anything that has umm.... our years = star dates kinda timeline? lol.... im not ready for science of just yet lol

thanxxxx heaps mate for all your help.... I know I can search but somethings I dont know where to start, first bloody decent convo ive had in eons lol X

Hello.

New to this board.

Not actually a big TV/film guy but STTNG is easily my favorite and the best TV series to ever exist.

Favorite chars are Q, Picard, Data and Laforge. In that order. Best episodes to me are the mind-bending ones. Never cared much for the personal/character-driven episodes.

Ignore stardates. They're totally made up. They are some resources out there that try to decode them and make sense of them but... yeah. Ignore them.

I COULD break down most of the TV Seasons/Movies by year, with the caveat that some time travel occurs so even if a Season takes place in say, 2372, there might be episodes that time travel and place in 1996. The good thing is that the show willl let you know... it's not just like, some mystery that it happened.

Overall, I would say it's not particularly important to know the year everything is happening. If you REALLY want to know, Memory Alpha is a great website that has all the answers. Look up an episode title and it will tell you when it takes place.

Hey everyone,
I just recently joined, and this thread caught my attention.
I am an avid TNG fan, from the ships(especially their designs), characters, and stories.
I was introduced to it when I was around 12, and was hooked from then on.

Hi everyone. I’ve been a fan for a very long time. I was born in the 80s so TNG just came out. I got into watching Star Trek a lot when I was a teenager and still love watching it. TNG is the one I’ve always watched. So it’s my favorite one. I think every character has something unique about them that I like. Captain Picard is very mission driven. He doesn’t let others get in the way of his decisions and I really like that about him. I also like the relationship with Q and the idea of a powerful being able to judge mankind. I find Q to be very alluring and able to sway people this way. I’ve read a lot of the TNG books and was really surprised to find out that the continuum was outside of the universe. It was very interesting.
