TNG 365

Hi gang--well, all I can add to the conversation is that neither TNG 365 or its predecessor TOS 365 were written as "making of books". It's really difficult to do one of those after the fact--especially 25 years after the fact. We were lucky with the DS9 Companion--we had access to everyone while the show was in production and they were all incredibly generous with their time. We also wrote a making of book about "Insurrection"--"The Secrets of Star Trek Insurrection" which was quite in-depth, but since the movie wasn't all that popular a lot of you probably never saw the book.

Hopefully, you'll find some stories and images in TNG 365 that you've never seen before. But truthfully, even if you hear the story straight from the proverbial horse's mouth--and we talked to a lot of them (er, actors and production people that is) for this tome--it doesn't mean that particular horse didn't provide the same story to a different author before, or a different audience (ever been to a convention? Ever heard the same story 8 times at 8 different conventions?). The only things that I can predict that people likely haven't heard before are things that Terry and I experienced first hand during the years we were at Paramount. And some of the things that we were told in our interviews for this book. And there are some cool images that we got from the studio, and from friends and acquaintances that we don't think have ever seen print before, including our favorite: an incredibly wonderful picture of the youngest members of TNG's writing staff circa 1993, goofing off together--each of whom went on to become high paid executive producers on non-Trek shows. Every single one of those "lads" was willing to rehash memories with us for hours and hours for this book, and somewhere in their very candid comments are bound to be a few things you haven't read elsewhere.

In any event, we're hoping you'll enjoy it! We know you'll let us know one way or another!

I found and bought a copy of that at a used-book store a couple of years ago.

I'd be happy to discuss The Making of Star Trek more in another thread, Christopher, but to do so here would only send the discussion further off track from the OP, so I'll refrain from doing so (in this thread).

An Enterprise 365 would be interesting (I'm being genuine here!). We could find out how the cast and crew felt about the poor reviews, drastic budget cuts and working under the threat of cancellation.

^Agreed. I would love some VOY and ENT reference materials. I have no hope of it actually happening though. To the consuming public, it seems that if it aint TOS or TNG, it aint worth buying.

Is this information really so unobtainable? I know we have no "Starlog" anymore, but ENT's cast do interviews and conventions even to this day.

Ratings indicate that a large number of TOS's prime time rerun fans of the 70s, and TNG fans of the late 80s/early 90s, did not follow through and avidly watch DS9, VOY or ENT.

Perhaps a future "ST 365" could be a more general one: covering DS9, VOY, ENT, licensed tie-ins such as the "ST Experience" attractions, aspects of fandom (ie. not covered by the upcoming Greenberger "The Unauthorized History"), conventions, etc.

That's a great idea, Therin. have a reference book that covers the whole franchise so us fans of the other series can get some nuggets. I like the idea of covering Star Trek: the Experience and conventions a bit as well. TOS and TNG have been heavily covered and referenced already so I'm more likely to buy something that ties in the other series with stories about the cast and production photos.

Too bad we couldn't get a combined VOY/ENT tech manual.

Maybe if the franchise ties those 2 shows together like conjoined twins their products will sell better.

Not sure that ENT and VOY complement each other too well. In my experience, a lot of diehard TNG fans who had no patience with DS9 or VOY were seemingly intrigued by ENT, so the shows seem to have developed discreet groups of followers, but not enough general crossover to make them as commercially viable as TOS and TNG.

Plus, of course, the factual tie-ins have to compete with readily-updated (free) online resources. The battle is to find ways to make the material fresh and palatable to random browsers in bookshops.

I would definitely be up for some BTS stuff for Enterprise and Voyager. While there is a lot of stuff available online, sometimes it is nice to get more of the details that books tend to contain. I picked up the Lost Season 1 Companion on discount at Wal-Mart a couple months ago, and there is quite a bit of stuff in there I'd never heard about, even though I've watched the DVD special features, and read a lot of stuff online.
