TMP/TWOK Dry Dock Question

How big is the drydock model? In TMP configuration it would have to be about 8' x 4' x 4', right? And in GEN configuration, I'd imagine it to be 8' x 4' x two or three feet in height. That's a big model, all right!

Good question. The Enterprise model was 7-8 feet long, and of course the drydock is appreciably bigger. Generations: about 11 feet long, four feet high, five feet wide. For TMP add another foot or so to the "high".

Dang. That's one humongous model. I'm amazed that the thing has so much structural integrity, given that it's basically a wireframe cage.

Well, they did have to hang it over the Enterprise to film... certainly the people shooting would not have wanted any risk of damage.

The really interesting question is how to hang it in my living room, but i digress.

It just strikes me as...dangerous...to pressurize such a large volume...
Okay... I'll bite. Why?

In addition to the comments Reverend made, if you lose containment when the doors are open, all of that atmosphere is going to vent into space and start moving objects with it.

While it is true it is unlikely to have enough force to move a multi-hundred thousand (or million) ton spacecraft out the door, it could set them in motion and since the interior of Spacedock does not appear to be a gravity well, those ships will continue to move until something gets in their way and stops them.

It will likely have more then enough force to haul out shuttles, transport pods, people, parts of starship structure, and other things.

So again, you're going to spend all this energy to not only produce an atmosphere, but consistently refresh it and cleanse it of all the toxic materials in it, just to save putting a few score (or hundred) folks in space suits?

To quote our favorite Vulcan, "That is not logical". :vulcan:

Ok, I just thought I´d bump this thread and ask Search4 if we please, please can´t get more pics? I´m looking all over the net for detailed pics of all the props from the auctions and all I find are the usual suspects, pics of this base are extremely hard to find, but Ambassadro-class for instance is relatively easy. Where are all the other models? I saw for instance the Jem Hadar battle cruiser model in an obscure shot, more pics of models...

Also,

Well, they did have to hang it over the Enterprise to film... certainly the people shooting would not have wanted any risk of damage.

I wonder.. Would they have mounted the assembly rightside up or upside down? Any sign of attachment points there?

All the images of the filming set up for TMP I have seen showed right side up, and it was mounted from the top, hanging over the Enterprise model. That's probably why it has no completed detail on the roof; it was never visible. They had a fairly ingenious method for lighting the ship in dock by using dental mirrors to reflect all the spotlights from a limited number of sources. It was a fairly simple method but probably required some meticulous set-up. Also, the Enterprise was mounted from its starboard side engineering hull, and either the drydock or the ship was physically rolled out during the departure scene (probably Enterprise but I don't know.) Enterprise's mount can be seen (in the pre-director's cut versions of the film) obscuring the drydock in the background. I don't know how they mounted it for Generations. That is quite a gem you have there Search4! Congrats.

Well, only a few months later, its ALMOST done. Thought you folks might want to see the result.

We went for a full rebuild of the TMP Drydock, once we had the pieces removed for Generations. Plus a new mounting system. Plus new lighting systems. Yipes.

This model is very very hard to photograph... working on better. Hope you enjoy these!

More details on my site, www.ncc1701.us. AND - anyone have an 8 foot TMP Enterprise?

Okay, I'm thoroughly impressed! I don't have enough spare $$$ to put it into the auction (how much did this thing go for again???) nor enough spare space in my home to store anything like this... but dayammmmm... this is too cool.

I presume you've shown this to Andrew Probert, or even been in contact with him? If not, by all means, do so! I'm sure he'd be glad to see it!

Cary I'm in full agreement with you on those points :techman:
