TMP Publicity Photos - Decker's Yellow Uniform

Was it this one?

Given Stephen Collin's hair and flesh tones, I think he looks better in the tan than in the gray uniform, which is more flattering for people with darker features.

Iirc that was mentioned in in the book by Solow and Justman
Long before that, makeup artist Fred Phillips described, in an interview, how it was a bit stupid to fit a baldcap over Shatner's toupe for the final aging makeup stage in "The Deadly Years", and so Shatner whipped it off so Fred could get him ready for that scene.

Now that's an anecdote that I hadn't heard before!

Shatner especially looked different, he no longer straightened his hair and wore a toupee.

He wore one throughout TOS, too. ;)

No no lol! I meant "Or wore a toupee". If IIRC Shatner's use of a toupee during TOS was to cover up the fact he had a receeding hairline, not because he was bald. By the time TMP rolled about that didn't matter and they just went with Shatner's naturally curly hairstyle, complete with receding hairline.

Walter Koenig (who is almost completely bald these days) also wore a wig during TOS season 2 until his hair grew out, whilst Leonard Nimoy had to have his hair specifically cut into the Spock "bowler cut" style. The only time you've seen Nimoy's actual hairstyle (in those days) was during his scenes at the end of TSFS.

I also didn't know that Walter was almost bald these days. I'm guessing that George is still sporting his own hair, though I could be wrong about that.

The irony is, TMP uniforms look very comfortable on screen. However, the reality is just the opposite. I, for one, always bought into the idea of space uniforms becoming less 'military' in an organization like Starfleet. The TMP uniforms convey that perfectly. The look of Starfleet in TWOK is jarring by comparison.

Ummm, no, he wore a new toupee, one that matched what was left of his hair.

And just before ST IV, Shatner supposedly underwent an expensive procedure - the scene of him swimming underwater to release the whales from the Klingon hold was partly to demonstrate the effectiveness of his "new hair". Shatner insisted on doing the scene the way it was shot.

I understand that John Winston (Mr Kyle) was a professional Hollywood barber when not working as an actor. He was Gene Coon's barber and - coincidentally? - Kyle seems to appear in Gene Coon episodes.

See the Shatner "Raw Nerve" video interview, which is online. Walter = bald.

Yep. And that was Gene Roddenberry's and Robert Fletcher's take on it, too.

This is just my take, but the TMP unis seem to be a natural progression from the ENT ones. While I know a large number of folks would prefer to believe that ENT never took place, the look and feel of the show, to me anyway, fits nicely with the look and style of the first movie.

I think I posted years ago on the Ent forum that Ent felt more like a prequel to TMP than to TOS.

Which is how the real world operates: clothing fashions, cars, music, furniture design, advertising, etc. There is an ebb and flow from traditional styles to wild, and back again. Low-waisted clothes give way to high-waisted, then back again. Women's heels get higher and higher, then go short. Fashion is cyclic. TNG's 24th century USS Pasteur is based on a very early design for TOS's 23rd century Enterprise; the 22nd century NX-01 Enterprise is a retro version of the future 24th century Akira class ships, etc.

Thank you for clarifying that for me, although I would have appreciated something less condescending and matter of fact. I'm not offended, I'd just appreciate that in the future you would be mindful of how I and others might feel. Just because these are words in an anonymous environment, doesn't mean that I'm not human all the same. :)

Huh? Feel about what? That I attempted to correct your previous response? My use of the term, "Ummmm"?

So with some posts I'm told I'm too verbose when brevity would do, just cut to the chase - and then others want a less-abrupt response with more words of reassurance... and no humour whatsoever?

The words "Ummmm" and "No" together are often taken badly on online forums. I don't see what your posting style has to do with this issue... I'm just asking if you would be mindful of what you say in future, because the way you worded your response could easily be taken the wrong way. I appreciate I made an error, but I would have preferred you to be a little less blunt.

Hey, no bad feelings :) I'm just making a request, we all say the wrong things sometimes (I do a lot!).

Again, I'm confused. Since when has using "Ummmm" and "No" together "often taken badly on online forums"? First I've noticed, and I'm here a lot. And if me saying "Ummmm" in order to be light and humorous in a thread, that had no heated arguments in it, is part of my posting style, then aren't you actually complaining about my posting style?

I can imagine that if we'd already been having a raging argument then you might construe anything I said as being condescending - or indeed any use of italics, bolding, ellipses, quoting - and there'd be a need to choose my phrasing very carefully to keep my points as direct as possible. But I'm really just innocently chatting about things here.

Thoroughly confused.

I can see Captain M's point, but I'm sure it's just a minor peeve. There is a certain snark that 'could' be perceived in the phrasing in question even when there is none intended.
It falls into the category of 'comic book guy' glib-ness or Like Biff saying 'Hellloooo McFly'..... if that helps clear up the confusion.

I have enjoyed all the stories shared back and forth and great to see Procutus and all the familiar names! :bolian:

Back on Topic, it's funny how the yellow uniform infiltrated the merchandising and I never once thought, hey, he doesn't even wear that in the movie! And believe me I have spent much too much time agonizing of Trek minutae.

MegoTMP action figures ad by Therin of Andor, on Flickr

Those Mego figures had lots of mysterious quirks. If you try to sit the stiff-legged figures on their chairs on the vacuuformed bridge playset they look ridiculous. Spock's uniform is painted in two-tone, similar to Kirk's admiral uniform, Ilia has thunder thighs (and a two-tone uniform), the Saurian (purple lizard) is labelled a Rigellian (green turtle), and so on...

I agree that Enterprise had none of TOS energy and felt more like a prequel to TMP. The Mego figures are not a good example since I think Kirk and Scotty were the only characters wearing a uniform that they wore in the movie.

Well, not quite. Kirk's uniform has the collar design of his captain's uniform. And they're all wearing dark shoes.
