TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

I've said it before - I want a complete version with all the extended & deleted bits from all the releases completed and included.

I have no problem with it branching so you can play whichever version you want with options, but...everything please.

Does that mean they should remaster/release just the DC and leave the theatrical version in waxy digitally-scrubbed purgatory?

That wasn’t what I was referring to. I was referring to the theatrical edition being available in its original aspect ratio and edit.

I want the theatrical version of VI as well. In original 2.35 aspect ratio. The director's cut can remain 2.00 (or whatever it was) if he really must.
Just to be clear I was referring to having both options, just like ST 2
Pretty sure the theatrical release of TUC has been released on Blu-ray.
I don't think 5, 6 & TNG films have been remastered the way the first four recently have though.

They need the same attention that 1-4 have had. New transfers, without DNR. GEN needs a total color-timing overhaul, and INS needs the geometry fixed. (There are quite a few shots in the first third that are stretched horizontally compared to the rest.)
The only visual issues I see in Insurrection look like they're from the anamorphic Panavision lens that was used during filming and not from the transfer, a case of "CinemaScope Mumps."

Insurrection sucks balls, but I bet it would look gorgeous in 4k HDR. It has a great color palate and cinematography. I feel the same way about Generations, except GEN is a far better film.

Depends if you have two versions of each branch.

Or not.

The “branching” on my 4k TWOK disk is flawed. If I watch the director’s version, the audio hiccups every time a scene with added material begins. It’s really irritating.

Could be, but it comes and goes during scenes. One side of the conversation will be okay, and the reverse is too wide. Regardless of the cause, I'd love for them to fix it.

Yes, Insurrection has that sumptuous location footage. I'd be interested in seeing how the CGI holds up at 4K.

It's your setup. I had that problem too. It's the setting on your player. Some receivers have issues with Dolby discs that branch. If you change the audio output setting on your 4K player the receiver will not have those hiccups. I suffered from that for 5 years with the 2016 Blu-ray. Then I was told the reason and switched the setting and the 4K and both the 2016 and 2021 Blu-rays stopped doing it. It WAS very frustrating.

I expect hardcore TMP fans know about this already, but did you know there were lyrics to Ilia's theme? I've loved this movie for 30 odd years - and I never knew about it :)

^ I forgot about that song. It was on the expanded soundtrack released by La-La Land Records in 2012. The lyrics were written by Larry Kusik, prolific writer of lyrics for vocal renditions of movie themes, including "A Time For Us" and "Speak Softly Love."

I vaguely remember a version by a female vocalist (I can't remember who), and that version actually had the words "Star Trek" in the lyrics.

One area that hasn't been showcased in a 'preview' sense is the audio of this new edition. I'm curious as to how much raw ADR takes they have access to for the bridge portions of the film. Watching the Director's Edition DVD recently, it really sounds like the sound team only had the finished audio mix to work with because some moments feel rough. For example, the first attack on the Enterprise from the theatrical edition.

*Red Alert Klaxon sounds*
Kirk: Standard on viewer!
Computer: Incoming fire-
Kirk: Force fields up full.
Computer Ahead-
Kirk: Deflectors now!
Computer: Zero mark zero. Incoming fire ahead-
Checkov: Force fields and deflectors up full Captain!
Computer: *At the same time* Zero mark zero.
In an effort to replace the original red alert klaxon and remove the computer voice, Kirk's initial order of 'Standard on viewer!' is removed entirely while his remaining dialogue has had editing work done to try and phase out the computer voice that played over him. The computer voice is still there if you know what to listen for. Be nice to hear that dialogue more clearly without the computer voice.

I think that's just the lyrics to the original Star Trek theme that Gene Roddenberry added so he could rip off Alexander Courage of both his royalties and theme credit (La-La Land Records still credits the original theme to both Alexander Courage and Gene Roddenberry). Wonder if anyone warned Goldsmith or Kusik about those fine details in Gene's contracts.

Is Canada getting its own Paramount+? More and more, the rest of the world is coming on board.

Maybe after the Paramount+ exclusive window?

The DE Team anticipated it would be available in both 4K discs and Blu-Ray after the exclusive window.

Paramount + has been in Canada for quite a while . But it's catalog is super tiny and is waaay different than the US version. None of the Trek tv shows are on it. I will sign up for a free preview to watch the new TMP DE if it does show up there.

But to hear it will be coming to regular Bluray is great news . The size of my tv and viewing distance doesn't really necessitate a 4k experience for me. I'm fine with regular HD. So if it does not show up on iTunes in 4k , regular Bluray will be my option for purchase.
