I had no intention of paying, I was going to use the 7 day free trial to watch it. :)

I hadn't heard of the release date of TMP DE (4K and Blu-ray?) being 26th September (UK I guess?), but looking at the following article it's due in the US (at least) on 6th September:

    https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/062122-1445

And I have every intention of buying the Blu-ray (I don't have a 4K TV or player so no point in buying the 4K disc).

Yup, it was originally reported on some blog that the release for TMP was the end of September, but now it seems to have been brought forward to the start of the month, maybe to coincide with the anniversary. Bring it on!!

Hopefully that early September release date also applies to the UK.

Here’s hoping, Mr Spot! It sometimes feels they don’t really care that much about any of us outside the US—we’re more an annoying contractual obligation than anything else.

Saw this in the theater last month, watched it on P+ soon thereafter, then again last night. This 43-year fan of this film is now firmly convinced that this is the final, as-close-to-perfect-edition as we need to get. It's done. And I'm pretty happy with it.

I 100% agree with those sentiments. In an imaginary world every fan would have their own cut of the movie with every line and every sound effect and every special effect and every bit of the movie tailored exactly the way they would want it, but this real world version is damn good and in my opinion the best version that's out there. And I'm going to be happy to own it come September and I'm not going to stress over every little tweak that was made or was not made.

Release date for the 4K disc is September 27th according to the following:

    https://ultrahd.highdefdigest.com/1...icturethedirectorsedition4kultrahdbluray.html

Which is puzzling as we thought the date was going to be the 6th:

    https://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/062122-1445

Hopefully there will also be a standard Blu-ray release.

BTW, I notice one comment under the first link stating that matte lines can still be seen around ships and other objects in the remastered DE. Is that really the case?

Occasionally. Many otherwise-unchanged visual effects shots were able to be rebuilt from raw footage that they found doing the restoration, but some of it couldn't be, and remains as it was in 1979, notably the first shot with the Klingons approaching the cloud.

It'd be theoretically possible to paint out the matte lines, but it'd be a lot of expensive work that's beyond the scope of the project (especially if the relatively quick-and-dirty job on the officer's lounge scene, which was similar work, is anything to go by).

I see, thanks for the explanation. That's a pity about the matte lines as I had assumed all of them would have been removed (I always found them distracting).

The opening doesn't need any time-consuming work, it just needs the color-timing tweaked. There was a version of the film before on home media that had the contrast at the right point where the mattes weren't obvious, I don't know why they didn't do that here.

    Or they just missed it.

Even in Avengers: Endgame the VFX supervisor reviews it with Corridor Crew on YouTube and sees a spot they missed.

I’ve preordered the “Complete Adventure”, I can’t believe we’re getting the SLV in 4K and widescreen, that’s so awesome! I almost wish they hadn’t finished the airlock shot just to see how much more set scaffolding could be seen!

I’m curious to see how they’ve handled the extended scenes on the bridge when V’ger is attacking the Enterprise. The SLV had the background sounds of the bolt screaming towards the ship and then the sound of it attacking the shields repeated two or three times. I’m assuming they’ll have fixed it, but it’s no biggie if they haven’t.

I wouldn't be surprised if the audio mix for the SLV is a little less slapped-together on the remaster. I remember when the TWOK DE came out, people who were familiar with the TV edit noticed the music extended to cover the added scenes was done more artfully on the DVD than it had been when the scenes were added in for TV.

You'll be able to see that shot unfinished on the set as a bonus.

Sadly they've removed the studio Rafters from two separate scenes
