TMP-DE fully restored in 4K…it’s about time!

Good job removing the matte lines. For a long time I tried to 'suspend disbelief' by sort of excusing black matte lines as "that's just how stuff looks in space in the 23rd century."

And I bought the DE on DVD the week it was released. I think it was about $35 at the time. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics' inflation calculator, that's $55.73 in today's money. I got it from Suncoast. Remember them? I understand there are a handful of locations still open. The interesting thing was, I was in there some days before the official release date of the DE. And I saw that they were already selling the mega set of all the movies on DVD, which included the TMP-DE! So I tried to get them to make an exception with the release date and sell me a copy of the TMP-DE early. They wouldn't do it though. :scream:

I got the TMP: DE as a birthday present, but for the other two-disc DVDs, I'd go to an FYE since the board had figured out that they consistently stocked them as soon as they got them, ahead of the street date.

My head canon for the ring ship - it was a early Vulcan project which utilized their existing tech in a familiar but scaled down version. The idea was, nudge the Humans towards building warp ships similar to their designs, and be a huge middle finger to other nearby species. Specifically, Andorians and Tellarites.

But the Humans did not buy it, they wanted their own designs, so only one ring ship prototype, was ever built.

And if for some reason this doesn't work, Please, I don't want to hear about it!

Do we yet have any more details of the release of this version, specifically:

- approximate release date
- whether it will be only available online to stream at first (a disappointing rumor I had read somewhere)
- if the 4K and HD Blu-rays will be available immediately on release

I plan to buy the HD Blu-ray initially as I don't yet have a 4K setup

Released on Paramount first I believe. Beyond that, nothing definite. They are still working on it.

Thanks, so if that's the case maybe a few months between digital and physical releases? I can wait ......... :)

We don't know yet, just that it'll be a Paramount+ exclusive initially. It might be anything from 6 months to a year before there's a physical release, if Discovery/Picard are any indication.

Definitely not. "Paramount+" will have the exclusive for a while. The intention is to offer lots of fresh/nostalgic stuff to new subscribers, such as "Strange New Worlds" and 4K TMP-TDE.

Someone said that it might come out 6 months to a full year after the premiere on Paramount Plus. That seems like a long delay for one remastered movie as opposed to waiting many months to release an entire series. I really can't believe they'd wait more than 6 months. I don't get Paramount + and I'm not going to sign up just for one movie no matter how much I love it.

I'm looking more forward to this now, for some strange reason. I've always preferred the 1983 cut of the film, the 1979 cut, and the 2001 DE in that order. But I really want to see the film in 4K. And I deeply suspect that what put me off from the DE 20 years ago will be resolved seeing it in such a high resolution. Some of the shots I've seen on TrekCore have convinced me.

If the delay means we get more extras than we've had to date (unused Trumbull SFX material, raw Memory Wall footage, full RA&A/Phase II test footage, and whatever else has been collecting dust in the vault all these decades), I'm willing to be patient.

Pretty much my plan, once it drops on P+. Depending on how close it it to SNW dropping in May, we'll probably keep it along with Netflix and Disney Plus.

I wonder if they’ll fix the fart torpedo. I remember asking why this effect looked choppy and it was because the effect layers were misaligned.

Based on how they do DVD/Blu-Ray releases of Streaming Trek, I think this new version of TMP will be available by Christmas 2022. So, if you wait it out, then look at the disc release as if it's a Christmas Present.
