News TLJ Negative Buzz Amplified by Russian Trolls, Study Finds

I'm sorry, but citing rumors about how much screentime Luke gets postmortem in Episode IX as proof that the film is "course-correcting" after The Last Jedi is ludicrous and the definition of "reaching".
I tend to think the same thing. It's a ridiculous assumption that reads in personal opinions to Abrams' actions.

^ It also smacks of delusional thinking because we've already been told that EIX is not going to "undo" anything that happened in TLJ.

Gosh 38 pages :) Though seven were References.

Weaponizing the haters: The Last Jedi and the strategic politicization of pop culture through social media manipulation.

-Background your sources:
"These scholars, and many more, have uncovered and unpacked fandom divides along fault lines of gender, race and sexuality in much more impressive ways than I could ever aspire to. Hence, I will mostly rely on the work mentioned above as accepted knowledge, focusing on how these divisions are being exploited for political and agitation purposes."

-Explain methodology:
Collection of tweets.
No mass collection performed but a focus collection on tweets to Rian Johnson.
Sentiment analysis and coding of user. Political leaning identified of several of a user tweets. Reduce to one sentiment per one user.
Manual sentiment coding to detect sarcasm and satire.
Divide into categories
Positive, Negative and Neutral.

-Analysis.
Focus on Negative category. Three types of 'negatives'. Political agenda. Troll/Sock puppet/bots. Real fantagonist.
Identify Russian trolls. Political agenda (as near as I can tell and his explanation of this agenda is vague - it's to make predominately Americans unhappy with their values and life). Note the agenda of Russian actors. Note accounts where profiles change - bots and socks.

-Concludes.
Three types of Negatives. More trolls than bots. 11 out of the 206 were bots. "No absolute attributions are claimed."

Or in his own words:

"The data does not support claims that a majority of fans are so dissatisfied with The Last Jedi that they wish to boycott further Star Wars releases under Disney ownership. Whether you consider the 21.9% (including, political activists, bots and trolls/sock puppets), or the 10.5% (excluding them) tweets expressing a negative attitude towards The Last Jedi, it is clear that a majority is satisfied, more than satisfied or non-committal in their attitudes."

I don't think he comes to a conclusion that supports his contention. The title suggests haters or the negatives are driven by political social media manipulation. It looks to me from his study they make up about half of the negatives. That is fair enough and it is worthwhile to study that but it seems reactionary to only see that. The point he really wanted to make is that majority of fans (from tweets to Rain) were satisfied or non-committal in attitude.
