Titanic: A Rememberance.

Everyone needs a lesson and the making of a good movie every now and again.

And lately I had convinced myself travel had come so far... I had even begun to enjoy plane travel (much as I might a funfair ride)... those images of a commercial plane landing in the Hudson river really were NOT good for my nerves. I guess I'll have to resort back to heartfelt and extended prayers before long journeys...

Whats never discussed is the fact that when the Titanic left England, part of it's cargo was several crates of Hellman's Mayonaise which were to ultimately be off loaded in America and loaded onto another ship whose destination was Mexico city since the mayor was a big fan of the stuff. Upon hearing of the ships loss, the mayor of Mexico City sent his regrets to the shipping line and the victim's families, but he still missed his Hellman's, so he created a holiday on the day that they the Mayonaise should have arrived in Mexico City. The holiday of course is "Sinko da Mayo"

That's not funny.

Lets see little Kirby on a New York - London oceanic crossing, and if he still has the cajones for these gags from his berth. :D

Too soon?

No really, I get it, but it is kind of 'funny' -I also got that

:shifty:

:guffaw:

I did some volunteer work for the Titanic Exhibition in Memphis in mid-1995, so I had a particular interest in James Cameron's movie when it came out a couple years later. Say what you will about the movie, what impressed me most was the 90% scale reproduction they built of one whole side of the ship.

Ditto that. I always had a weird fascination with shipwrecks and plane crashes and stuff as a kid, particularly Titanic. RIP :(

I was always fascinated with the story of the Titanic as a kid and was astounded with Ballard found the wreck back in 85(?). Also, did you ever read the book, A Night to Remember? Every Titanic buff should read that book.

I had the Scholastic 'picture book' Exploring the Titanic that came out after Ballard found the wreck which was probably the original inciting incident for me being obsessed with it. Ken Marschall's paintings are amazing. (Lost Liners is another great big book of mostly pictures and paintings by Ballard/Marschall that covers various wrecks.)

I do have a copy of A Night to Remember, and I quite enjoyed it. I might also recommend Her Name, Titanic by Charles Pellegrino. It tells some stories that weren't in ANtR and also nicely alternates between the past and the present.

And if anybody wants to add "the future" to that, The Ghost From The Grand Banks by Arthur C Clarke is also about the Titanic.

Well, it's about an attempt to raise the Titanic in the year 2012; it was written before the Titanic was actually found, so the details don't match reality, but it's still a good ACC book. It was also my introduction to the Mandelbrot Set, and has an appendix on the subject.

I think so, but I never met an Arthur C Clarke book that I didn't like. Here is an edition that is actually in print. :)

Wow. I read Raise the Titanic when the movie came out. I was terribly disappointed with the movie. The book was a great read.

^^^ Yeah, great book but what a horrible movie. That guy that played Pitt had absolutely zero personality.
