TIME mag article on Deep Space 9 before its launch

Funny how articles like this always mention the "real: stars...special effects. Silly. There's much more to a number of science fiction tv shows than special effects.

"Star Trek: The Next Generation, is in its sixth season in syndication and is seen by 20 million people each week, making it second only to Wheel of Fortune among syndicated shows."

I knew TNG had good ratings but I had no idea 20 million was the average each week.

Most shows would kill for those kind of numbers.

2 million dollars per show?

$10 per person, on average, who watches. :)

These productions ain't cheap, when you factor in all post-production, the amortization of salaries, guest stars, sets...

DS9 was the largest most expensive set created on an indoor soundstage for televison. The up keep alone to make it look fresh every episode by itself probably was expensive.

It was the number one syndicated TV show for several years if you didn't include Jeopardy and Wheel. You also have to remember that those numbers are practically impossible for a syndicated show to reach these days. Waaaaay more shows, five times as many channels. Hell, only the most popular network shows like Idol and CSI and Heroes approach 20 million viewers a week.

And hey, I heard a girl on "Next Top Model" the other day say "resistance is futile". She's 19 and has probably never watched an episode of TNG in her life, but it's a testament to the show's popularity that that statement has taken it's place beside "beam me up" et al. in the public lexicon.

Wasn't it the Promenade that was the biggest set and not the entire thing as a whole?
