Time for a Cybermen redesign?

I'm not a fan of the cybermen (old or new)... but that one in "The Pandorica Opens" was pretty effective. I don't see a need for a change.

The new Cybermen have grown on me, and they've definitely changed the way they're presented since they first appeared on Pete's World. I just find them a bit too hulking sometimes, which works well sometimes but not others. I also disliked the way they went from true cybernetic organisams to just a brain in a tin. They're effectively robots whereas they used to have the strengths of both man and machine- ie the flexibility of humanity allied with the cold ruthlessness of machine. The new ones also had no personality. I know its a daft thing to want of a supposedly emotionless race, but sue me I miss David Bank's Cyberleader!

Like I say though they have gotten better, which suggests the way they're being filmed/treated is different if nothing else. I thought the graveyard scene in The Next Doctor worked really well, and the one that went after Amy in TPO was very effective.

I don't think they need a major change, just slimming down and making less clunkingly robot like, and I want them to be more than a brain in a box, which again going by TPO is something the producers are leaning towards.

Apparently there was a cyberwoman in some episode of Torchwood but thankfully I went to Lacuna inc and had all memory of watching that episode erased (if only!)

I do kinda miss the good old days, when the Cybers looked different just about every time they turned up.

I can live with the current look if I have to (though a few minor tweeks to the suit would certainly be welcome). In the end its how they behave thats important.

Well, verify the accuracy of the rumor, first. But, honestly, it would be like him saying the Daleks in PO/BB were the gold RTD ones. It makes no sense compared to what we saw on the screen. Thus, unless someone on screen says that those were Mondasian, I think what walks like a duck, looks like a duck, stomps like a duck, and quacks like a duck is...in fact......wait for it...........yes, that's right: a duck.

Common sense. :techman:

Is there a reason the Mondasian Cybermen can't look like the Cybus Cybermen?

Nothing says they can't, no. They just don't. Do birds look like planes? Do cars look like bulldozers? So far, we've seen nothing in Doctor Who that says Mondasian Cybes have suddenly changed to look like Cybusmen.

Are you going somewhere with this, or just nitpicking to be heard? I can tell you're edging around for a debate here. But, honestly, you should pick another subject. This one isn't even debatable. Facts are facts.

But some people refuse to accept facts no matter what the supporting evidence.

The only way the Mondosian/Telosian Cyberman could look like the Cybus models is for it to be an evolution from the far distant future.

Another point worth considering is the inspiration when Davis and Peddler created them. At the time people were concerned at the notion of what would happen if body parts were replaced with artificial ones (which is what we saw with the original a fusion of technology with organics). The Cybusmen where the brain is simply transplanted into metal body is something different. Whereas the Mondosians began to experiment with cybernetics because as a means of survival, the Cybus models were about one man's meglomania and fear of death.

Hell if they wanted to do a good Cybermen origin story they could have always adapted the audio "Spare Parts".

The only way the Mondosian/Telosian Cyberman could look like the Cybus models is for it to be

a cost-saving measure to reuse the existing suits as they can't be arsed/afford to design new ones every time the buggers turn up, like they did back in the days when they were just off-the-shelf wetsuits sprayed silver and only needed hew helmets moulded.

Real-world reasons never answer in-universe questions. Every single person in this thread is 100% aware of the facts you list. Certainly doesn't change the fact that if we can have day-glo Daleks, we should be able to have redesigned Mondasian Cybes. At least, that's the hope for a brighter tomorrow... ;)

Well the beeb obviously could afford a new Tardis set, new Daleks and new Cybermen! Sure they'll get some kind of a makeover eventually--wouldn't surprise me if they look different the next time they return...whenever that turns out to be...

Well, then, let's try

The only way the Mondosian/Telosian Cyberman could look like the Cybus models is for it to be

A fortunate coincidence that in this week's invasion attempt, they happen to look like that design, and we know the Telosians/Mondasians have looked that way at some point cos the Daleks in Doomsday recognized them straight off... (with no, "Well you look like Cybermen, but not quite, and I bet that difference is cos you come from a parallel universe.")

Or they could modify the suits a bit (as pointed out change the logo on the chest plates, revamp the headpieces a bit) but the easiest way is to change their mannerisms - no more delete, no stomping, find a way to explain about the process of cyberconversions that's not a brain transplant.

Okay, your first one was more palatable...

Are you going somewhere with this,

Yes: To the point that there's no particular reason to think that that wasn't a Mondasian Cyberman.

Fantasy world. You are in complete fantasy world if you are stretching all facts to see the Cybusmen in Season Five as anything other than exactly that. :guffaw:

I did not say it was a Mondasian Cyberman. I said there's no reason to think it wasn't.

Please learn the distinction between necessary and sufficient conditions.

I thought it was cool when its head was trying to assimilate Amy. I couldn't care less which planet if came from.

I said there's no reason to think it wasn't.

Of course there is. Because it wasn't. No more proof is required than what was on the screen. I cannot make it any simpler for you, man...
