Tim Russ: the JJ-verse should commit seppuku

When asked in an interview what approach he would take for Star Trek XII, Russ said that the answer was to go forward, not backward in time. “I would do a parallel timeline,” said Russ, “go forward in sort of a renegade style.”
"What? It's already a parallel timeline?" He added. "Huh. I didn't know that. Anyway, even though fans would probably be totally happy not to see the JJ-verse further complicate the timeline with additional time-travel, they should totally do that anyway."

Russ went on to explain why he wanted the new movie to take that direction. “I would bring in a number of characters from the each of the other series, as long as the timeline is consistent,” he said. “I would rather do something like that than a prequel."
"The problem with this new timeline," he added, "is that it has too much TOS, and not enough TNG-era stuff. So now that we're in a totally new timeline, we should jump forward a few centuries and meet the new versions of future characters, who will totally exist because the same parents got together and created the same embryos. The destruction of Vulcan in this new timeline won't really have any significant effect, in the long run. But remember: the timeline should remain consistent. And the whole prequel-idea thing? Screw that."

At this point, Russ cracked his third beer, and drank deeply.

"That way you could bring in characters from The Next Generation like Patrick Stewart. There would be Kate Mulgrew from Voyager, any number of crew members from Voyager. I would bring in Deep Space Nine characters, too."
"Sure, Trek XI made huge amounts of green by making the franchise the most accessible to newcomers it's been in decades, but it's not as though Paramount's main concern is to sell a product or anything," he continued. "Patrick's been taking direct-to-dvd parts left and right - let's face it, he was terrible in BloodRayne, so there'd be no problems getting him back whatsoever. And bringing in Ethan Phillips or Marina Sirtis would really boost chances for an Oscar. Did you know Marina Sirtis was in Crash? Wonderful movie, won Best Picture. You should totally tell JJ that if you see him."

"But what's that show that came after mine? The one with the Borg-Vulcan hybrid? Forget that one, because that one happened later than Voyager, and we need to keep the timeline consistent," Russ added, while lighting up a joint.

He concluded:

"Any one of [those characters] would be a kick for the fans. They all have their favorites and each has its fan base. I’ve certainly learned that.”
"That's why the public was clamoring for DS9 and Voyager movies once our respective shows finished. And we totally would have done them. I mean, we're all really busy, but we would have found the time somehow. Especially if Tuvok had hooked up with that Borg-Vulcan chick they wound up putting in the new show. And Kate could have split up with Chakotay and married Sisko. That would've been really daring. Ebert would have written a much more positive review for that one."

"So basically, the fans tolerated a brief dip into parallel-TOS nostalgia for old time's sake, but it's time to move on. And I'm sure that if you asked them nicely, Rick and Brannon would be happy to write a fantastic script bringing us back to the Voyager era."

"Seriously, please, I've got nothing better to do."

Um, his ideas for the next film are terrible. There's a reason why DS9 and Voyager movies never got made-they would've had almost no crossover mainstream appeal.(And I like both shows a lot, I'm just acknowledging the reality of it)

His movie would come off as second-rate fan fiction designed to appeal to a very small audience.

By the way, I think Tim Russ is cool. I just hope he's not consulted for the next film.

I suspect he may have been pulling the interviewer's leg with those remarks, just a little. Consider that Russ was reached by phone for the interview while he was appearing at a convention; it's not much of a stretch to imagine a well-known practical joker like Russ simply making something up on the spot - a question like that is license to steal, after all.

The question following didn't make the same sort of invitation to invent and it received a pretty straightforward answer.

Maybe, but the following question was also about him.

If he was joking, he's fooled everyone in this thread but you. ;)
