Are X-Wing, TIE Fighter Coming Back?

LucasArts president hints at return of beloved franchise.

August 4, 2009 - If you ask veteran PC gamers to list their favorite games of all time, odds are X-Wing or TIE Fighter (or both) are somewhere on their lists. There's a reason for that, as both were superb action flight simulators that immersed you in the epic Star Wars conflict between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire. X-Wing was the first game in the series and TIE Fighter the sequel, so TIE Fighter is often more beloved because it was more refined. Plus, it was awesome to rise in the ranks of the Imperial Navy and become the Emperor's most valued fighter pilot.

It's been more than a decade since the last game in the series was released; hard to believe but X-Wing Alliance was released in February of 1999. The space sim genre that was established by the Star Wars games and Origin's Wing Commander series then began to fade for various reasons. However, fans have longed for a sequel to TIE Fighter since then.

However, things may be changing. There's a new president at LucasArts, Darrel Rodriguez, who seems intent on revisiting the company's past glories. In the past few months, LucasArts has begun to release its library on Steam, and the company recently released The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition on PC and Xbox 360. The latter was a remake of the classic adventure game with improved graphics (but for those who want a nostalgic return, you could toggle the original graphics at any moment.)

Now here's where it gets interesting. G4 recently asked Rodriguez about the possibility of X-Wing and TIE Fighter returning. His answer: "We don't have any announcements now, but stay tuned. We will soon."

It might be time to dust off that joystick.

Hmmm...

A new TIE Fighter would be amazing, seriously one of my favorite games of all time...Even a Steam-friendly version would be okay with me though. I wonder how well a TIE Defender would handle using the Xbox 360 controller.....

I was going to say "You'd have to catch me first!" but then I remembered, "OH DAMN he'd have SLAM overdrive!"

Now, a new X Wing or TIE Fighter game for PS3 and 360 would kick the crap out of the old Rogue Squadron games...

I remember in the final missions of Enemies of the Empire, the 2nd pack of bonus levels, your commanding officer comments about the battle of Endor and something along the lines of "We should be hearing of the Empire's final victory over the Rebellion, with the defeat of Ex-Admiral Zaarin truly this is a great day for the Empire." And I'd grown to care so much about......The Empire! that all I could muster was "They don't know yet. :("

Don't get too excited, it's most likely Steam re-releases of the series.

That would still get me excited.

I'm sure plenty of people will be excited about seeing the series being rereleased on Steam but I just didn't want people to be thinking that a new game is coming out if they didn't know about how LucasArts is rereleasing their classic games on Steam.

Maybe they'll make a new game if the rereleases sell well, but this isn't a new game announcement.

I thought it was pretty Trek-ish to have that rogue Imperial Admiral trying to escape on a ship with a cloaking device at the end of the add-on campaign.

Cloaking devices were mentioned in The Empire Strikes Back, they're nothing the video games invented.

Most people seem to prefer TIE Fighter, but I thought X-Wing was much better. It had all the Star Wars stuff I liked, without trying to invent too much bullshit. TIE Fighter had that whole TIE Defender thing which was just ugly and ridiculous.

Of course, when it came to inventing ugly "shouldn't be in Star Wars" ships, the prequel trilogy takes the cake.

I also hated all the 'traitorous imperials' storylines. You don't play TIE Fighter to blast other TIE Fighters, you should be wiping out Rebel Scum 24/7.

"Enough of this charade, Gamma 1 is the Emperor's stool pigeon! Gamma 2 and 3, destroy Gamma 1 now!"
:guffaw: :bolian: My favourite TIE Fighter moment.

They should give both X-Wing and TIE Fighter an Alliance-style update, and make them all work on XP/Vista/7. X-Wing is the least sophisticated gameplay-wise, and could do with the decent bit more atmosphere (seen in TIE Fighter) that it deserves. I remember the scrapyard in Alliance being the best training level of all the games.

If there is an update or a new game, Lawrence Holland had better be involved. They were his babies, after all. :bolian:

I read that Rogue Squadron will be coming back.
There are rumors Factor 5 (or what's left of them) is working on a new Rogue Squadron game for the Wii. I also saw a rumor a year or two ago in EGM that a different team is working on a Rogue Squadron Trilogy disk for the Wii with upgraded visuals for all three games.

Personally I hope both rumors are true.

Been a long time since I played X-Wing but i recall it being a lot harder.

I agree tho that in TIE fighter you spent a surprising amount of time shooting at... other tie fighters. Which just didn't feel as good as blowing X-Wings apart.
