TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finished

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

I admit, that was a pretty stylish video, though I had to turn the sound down to minimize the rock soundtrack. I wonder how long it'll take for others to fan-edit in some more appropriate/orchestral music. :p

'sup.

I didn't hate the music entirely, but you'd think with all the work put into the animation they'd have taken some time to repurpose some John Williams music...

The whole point of doing things like this, for a lot of people, isn't to merely imitate but to put a unique spin on it. When you decide to mashup things that are stylistically quite different, it divides people into two camps, those who think "gee, isn't that a clever idea" and the purists who say it just doesn't work. I'd say this is technically amazing but the mashup doesn't work. The anime by itself would be great but anime in SW drag just doesn't work.

LucasFilm might allow fan films etc and that's continued with the Disney ownership of the franchise but that might not apply to the music.

IOW use of the John WIlliams music could result in take down notice depending on who owns the copyright.

That music replacement Timby linked to is better, but still not right. And you lose the sound effects, which is maybe unavoidable.

It really needs to be scored like what was done with the original guitar work, but using existing SW music (ideal) or a new orchestral piece if that violates copyright.

Adding in the dialogue would also help immensely.

Watching the Rebel pilots react to being so badly outclassed by taking the fight right to the Imperials, first by striking at the Interdictor and then the aborted attempt to end-run through the asteroid field, was great.

Definite memories of playing X-wing on harder difficulty and getting facerolled by a challenging mission when you're almost always the underdog with very limited reinforcements.

I figured it was something like that.

I don't really object to the music the way others do. It adds kind of a Top Gun element to the whole thing, which makes sense in the abstract, but is still jarring given the kind of background music we're used to.

As for voices...with real anime voice-overs are usually done after the animation is completed anyway, so the producers can always add voices in at some future date.

I thought the guy who added sound to the original short did a pretty good job.

The music on the final video is definitely jarring.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

^That was definitely slick -and the first version I had seen years ago. That guy needs to get on the final animation. Half of Star Wars for me is the sound.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

^ Ooh, yeah, much better. Much less distinctive, true, but better.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

I really enjoyed it. The animation style and music took me right back to Transformers the Movie from 1986.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

The music had a similar feeling to the non-Williams music in TIE Fighter.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

Yep. That's visually outstanding. Nay, brilliant. :techman: :bolian: :mallory:

And the music is god-awful.

Actually as a fan of 1980ies era anime - the music was VERY MUCH appropriate. The art style and general action also seemed very influenced by SDF Macross/Robotech (in the U.S.) to me.

Still a very well done and fun piece.

Edited to add (to avoid a double post):

Prince Lotor is an Imperial Admiral. Cool.

Actually the Imperial Admiral reminded me more of the character of Char Aznable from the original Mobile Suit Gundam series.

My anime experience is limited and I hadn't seen that one, so I'm sure you're right, but his eyes and his expression made me think of Lotor.

I liked it, it didn't remind me of the game really but I enjoyed that game and this short. The music didn't bother me, but I didn't have it up loud.

I really used to love that game, too bad it was the only one that was good, the next game was a real step down and I didn't try any others after that. GoG is selling TIE fighter, I might buy it again.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

^X-wing vs. Tie Fighter was pretty dissiapointing despite the updated graphics engines. There was an expansion pack that added some more single player content and the Super Star Destroyers.

X-wing Alliance, the last game in the series, was also pretty good. Basically it allowed you to use a Millenium-falcon style craft (Although you can also play the Falcon itself in the later part of the game) and also join up with the alliance (So technically it's more of a sequel to the original game since you're a good guy).

An expansion or sequel was in the planning stages (as the story ended on a cliffhanger), but that was the time The Phantom Menace came out and the priority switched to tie-ins like the Racer, Adventure Game, etc. although they still produced the Rogue Squadron/Starfighter console series, which, while it looked better than the X-wing games for the most part were far more limited in scope.

Also regarding Char, it does kind of look like his appearence in the Char's Counterattack movie, which was (sort of) the end of his(and Gundam's) original story arc. I wonder if the red Imperial outfit is sort of a nod to that, as Char in the various series has the nickname of "The Red Comet", something which also extends to his outfits and his mecha/Mobile Suits, which are usually with some exceptions, custom painted red. (Although in the old EU Ysanne Isard who controlled the Empire shortly after Endor wore a similar costume).

So, does the Yamato show up at the end? ;)

I can almost imagine an alien intelligence watching this:

What are they doing in space, father?

These humanoids love to make metal dance--those who dance the best get to live.

The music had a similar feeling to the non-Williams music in TIE Fighter.

None of the garage band buttrock music in that short sounded even remotely close to Clint Bajakian's work. I can't think of a single instance in TIE Fighter where the music had wailing electric guitars and crazy drum riffs.

Re: TIE Fighter PC Game-inspired 80s Anime-style Short Finally Finishe

IMHO he was talking about the music in the 2 minute WIP version.

God, I had forgotten that; it's like everything about the late '90s condensed into a few minutes. I should ban you for making me think of this...
