About 30 years ago I saw a fanzine article that broke down the symbolism of each finger's position in Vulcan tradition. IIRC, I believe the thumb was out to symbolize the solitude of the individual.

Now something like that makes total sense..I hadn't thought of it that way...

In the beginning Vulcans spread out all five fingers to show individuality, but then the Vulcan Tavak was born with syndactyly, and the rest is history.

Just one more pic to illustrate the proper Vulcan salute, for no other reason than I just love this pic:

I thought it was "V" for Vulcan. ;)

Found it. "The Star Fleet Handbook, the Aliens of Star Trek" by Geoffrey Mandel, 1976 (3rd edition):

Hope I have a stapler to put it back together now!

Thumb out, obviously.

SECTOR 7: Great pictures!!!!!

Regarding the picture of the Vulcan girl. She looks great. She has a waist size of like, 2. I hate her.

I check this thread once a day to get a look at her...my wife has even excused me to contact that Vulcan girl, should Pon Far ever settle in (we have the same arrangement for Nicholas Cage for my wife..then again..wait a second!! Nick Cage is a REAL person..there are no Vulcan women!!!)
