Three Musketeers (2011)

I enjoyed the movie. Its not going to win any Oscars but it has a good cast and was a good hour and fifty minutes of silly fun.

On twitter, Milla Jovovich bitches at Summit for not advertising movie better

Also, “3 musketeers” opens in the US 2night! Do you think ppl know abt the movie? Ask your friends! Do they know it’s a fun family film?

I think “summit” hve swept “3 Musketeers”, a grt family adventure film, under the rug in the US. Shame on them. SHAME ON YOU “SUMMIT”.

Summit fires back

I asked Summit last night what it thought of Milla’s accusations, and an executive pointed out that the actress had been up in Canada shooting the next Resident Evil installment “and working 15-hour days and probably didn’t see the campaign. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about and we don’t know where she’s coming from.” On the other hand, Jovovich is married to Three Musketeers 3D director Paul W.S. Anderson, so it’s hard to imagine she is completely clueless to how Summit marketed the film. Nevertheless, Summit points to awareness in the 80s as a sure sign that the movie was marketed adequately even if U.S. grosses were terrible. “Wouldn’t you think she would call us first about this? It’s frustrating. it’s not the right way to behave. If she has a problem then come to the studio and talk about it.” Milla was tweeting on her flight to Japan where Three Musketeers 3D is debuting at the Tokyo International Film Festival.

I don't know about Milla, but I saw a ton of commercials on tv just before the movie was released.

That's just what I am expecting. Since I really like movies like this I will probably like it.

Oddly enough, I saw two trailers for the movie when I saw Captain America. It's the only time I've ever seen a movie advertised twice. There have also been plenty of ads since.

Of course you did. The question is can it be mindless fun? I thought it had some potential in that regard, but it doesn't seem to have enough to actually make an entertaining movie.

I had no desire to see it. Now that I know there are airships in it (seriously, WTF?!) I have even less desire to do so.

I read the original book as well as its sequel about twenty-five years ago and quite enjoyed them. A good adaptation I could have been interested in. But whatever this thing is it's The Three Musketeers in name only.

Not any old airships, it's ye olde ocean faring galleons with giant airbags. also two air galleons fight it out in the sky by firing cannonballs at each other, well they do in the trailer I saw.

Still it seems more historically accurate than Braveheart

I went and saw the 2D version last Wednesday in my local cinema, and whether it was because it was an afternoon showing, or because it was in 2D, or both, there were less than 10 people at the showing I saw. I actually enjoyed it.
When I was watching the two airships battle it out in the clouds I got a Wrath of Khan vibe about it. It reminded me of the battle at the end in the Mutara Nebula between the Enterprise and the Reliant
.

I saw trailers both at the theater and on Hulu. I'd say it's been marketed pretty heavily. It's a $90 million movie, how would they not market it?

Summit is probably right that she's just been way too busy to notice the campaigns.

They're based off a Da Vinci design in the movie.

I loved the film, very visually impressive and enjoyable.

THIS! Saw it with my son: LOVED it! Over the top, fun action flick. What's not to enjoy? It's certainly a lot better than the last THREE Pirates movies! :techman:

This is the movie you show people when they tell you that the Star Wars prequels are the worst movies of all time.

I just saw this at the dollar theaters and *thoroughly* enjoyed the thing.

I had gone in with lowered expectations that this is going to be almost a completely different story with *nothing* related to Dumas' novel but for the names of the characters. And I was surprised by how much they managed to approximate back to the plot of the book.

As an example about items that are reflected clearly in the book-
D'Artagnan's Gascon upbringing, the ugly horse from his father (actually his mother in the movie), the fight with Rochefort, Rochefort supposed to be meeting with Milady, significant portions of how D'Artagnan manages to irritate all 3 musketeers into dueling him, the fight with Richelieu's guards at the scene of the duel, Constance being a lady-in-waiting for the Queen, the King siding with his Musketeers as Richelieu complains, the musketeers journey to England to retrieve the Queen's jewelry (the entire necklace instead of a few studs), the Official Saction note by Richelieu to Milady and so on....Heck - I could even see an echo of Athos' aversion to having servants speak in his interaction with Planchet (movie-Planchet is actually a weird mixture of Planchet and Mousqueton)

Where the plot gets a significant change is in increasing Milady to almost James Bond-esque love-'em-leave-'em levels and significantly changing the Buckingham-Queen interactions.

The locations were generally great - what's not to like about French castles/palaces or steampunky airships? The 3D (while not great) was not horrible. The action was good popcorn fun.

I wish people had seen this movie more. Would have loved to see more of what happens next. Probably somewhere Seldon would make his appearance.
