Thoughts on Lex/Lana

Joe Washington

For those of you who were left unsatisfied with how the Lex/Lana pairing was handled in Smallville, what do you think would have been the way to do it? Making their relationship more darker:evil:? Or less darker:)? Making Lana into the next Lady Macbeth or a simple pawn in the conflict between Clark and Lex?

I would have not made Lana a prize possession that Lex wanted. The show made a point of having Lex want everything that Clark had. Only being a Luthor he corrupts and taints things. This happened with Lana. She was manipulated and used as a pawn. Lex might have loved her, but his own personality and nature prevented him from treating her anything more than a trophy. I think they're relationship would have worked had they not forced them together. Not sure if I'm expressing myself properly.

Lex & Lana was a total mistake. I never wanted to see them together at most I would have liked to seen the friendship get to where is was almost becoming romantic and then Lex drive her away...the whole moving in, sleeping together, her fake pregnancy and them getting married with them eventually splitting & Lana faking her death was way too much. It would have been better Lex never getting the prize and making sure Clark never got to be with Lana. I saw no use in putting them together...it is what made S6 so awful. IMO.

[edit] And yes I know Lex wanted everything Clark had and this makes the character even more pathetic than he already was...they really ruined 2 characters with this Lex & Lana. Ugh.

^ Yeah, when I first heard they got together I went, "really? Aw, jeez..." I looked at the dvd cases in Best Buy - so pretty, filled with so much content. I wanted to get them, to take them home, to open them and devour them... yet in my heart, I knew that, wtf, no, I really didn't. :p

She just always was too provincial for such a mover as Lex.

The only reason Lana went running into Lex's arms is because Clark is a douche.

I'd say this was another example of botched potential with this show. It had a chance to be interesting but after the writers decided they didn't know what to do with the two of them and still didn't give up on Clark/Lana it was doomed from the start. DOOMED I SAY!

True. After the way he treated her while red, at the start of S3, there was just no excuse to not level with her about what had happened... particularly since she, too, just got the first-time experience of killing a man.

They really should have had Clark tell Lana his secret early on. Instead because they wanted drama and tension they carried it on and on. Until fans just got frustrated with the two of them. See this is why I really blame the writers for ruining Lana's character. Sure Kristen deserves some of the blame but not all of it. Her acting wasn't THAT bad (yeah I know people are gonna continue to disagree with me about KK).

Well, if I was Clark, I'd have kept with Chloe in 2.1 and told her then, with Pete soon after... that said, of course the writers wanted to stretch out the drama, and it of course worked in the sense that the series didn't burn out, Moonlighting-style.

But for moi, it was Clark not telling Lana after 3.2 that was just the last darn straw.

There were multiple opportunities for him to tell her and his excuse was that he was lying to protect her. If they'd just use Bryne's run or even one of the inspirations for "Smallville" "Superman For All Seasons" and have Lana know their relationship would have been much better. Clark wouldn't have all that dead weight on his shoulders. They also used Lana as an excuse to start Lex turning evil. Pathetic.

Eh, once it became clear that the producers would continue down an artistically impoverished road as long as their pockets got lined (again, an understandable if not laudable course), faithful viewers arguably got what they signed up for. IIRC, Gough and Miller never promised a demonstration of how Clark would become Superman; merely instead a look at his teenage years. And for at least two seasons, they did pretty well.

I'm frankly still waiting for a compelling screen story showing the Clark/Superman, and as I doubt this series' finale will satisfy, it looks as though we may not get that for a long while if ever. How does such a naturally mild-mannered, humble guy as Clark get the stones to wear such a ridiculous outfit and call himself Superman with a straight face, even if he does have unique (sort of) abilities? In the early pulp decades of the character, AFAIK, neither persona was reflective enough to give that question any thought; it was just there, like Jesus always knows he's the son of the big guy upstairs, end of story. Superman: The Movie literally skipped over that moment (/Daddy made him do it), and subsequent movies (the upcoming one included) have all taken place after it. Sigh. :p

Re: Smallville; sure, it would have been nice had the writers been able to write 20-plus episodes a year and keep everything fresh with a minimum of cheap soap opera drama, but while I myself certainly would've loved to try, I doubt I'd have been able to match the success they've had. I'm just happy to be able to enjoy the twenty-four best eps of the first three seasons; that's already loads more (and in many cases, IMO, much better) Supes entertainment than the movies have provided.

I'm pretty sure that the finale is going to be just like the rest of the series has been, pathetic. My interest and delight with the show has been wavering over the last three seasons and this season has been dreadful. On par with season seven for worst of the series.
