Thoughts on Discovery Starfleet Uniforms (Trailer Edition)

I have no problem with these new uniforms, and I fail to see why they are a problem for ten years before TOS.

Do the uniforms in TMP look remotely like TOS? Do the uniforms in TWOK look remotely like TMP?

And all that said, there's no guarantee they'll even embrace the style of TOS as we go on. They may just pull a "it always looked like this, you just couldn't tell" move. We'll see.

I'm sort of quietly extatic with the department colors - they're almost a perfect match to what we had in the TOS pilot, after all. And it's good continuity that Starfleet rotates or outright swaps the colors every third tuesday, but always has three. (Except in the TOS movie era.)

What I would like to see is the Abramsverse thing: Starfleet "really" goes for these pompous uniforms but the heroes still "normally" wear the simple pants-and-blouse thing shipboard, and some skippers just happen to be more uptight and insist on the pompous over the practical, until the stardust hits the ramscoop.

What I am pretty sure about is that I won't get to see that this time around...

TV budgets tend not to stretch to quite so many uniform options as movies do - even real world military shows like Stargate tended to have the actors wear exactly the same uniform variant most of the time and they had surplus stores to raid!

I daresay we'll get a dress uniform at some point, and maybe some kind of landing party coat, we seem to like those recently. But I'd be surprised if the variety we saw in the JJ films repeats itself.

I'm really digging the uniforms. It has all the elements it needs; a bit of formality, a bit of si fi, a bit of retro and I actually quite like how the metallic match up wit the TOS colours (bronze for red, silver for pale blue etc) ....

The only thing I'm not terribly keen on is the rank system. It's a bit too subtle for my taste and I've always hated the idea of logo and rank being merged (such as Future Imperfect). Aside from the look, it's also going to be problematic selling that inevitable QMX merch as they'll likely just pick a rank per pin and sell them that way (Sci/LT, Commander/Ops etc).

Overall I think they hit the mark nicely. I didn't expect that level of formality, but it fits nicely with the Enterprise and Kelvin era's and it'll stand very nicely apart from the movies updated TOS style.

The comment on them being hard to get for us fans unless we go down the liscences route...

....I was asked tomake one when all we had was a shoulder (some people honestly think I can tell a whole costume from seeing shoulder detail and an off centre zip!) and again the requetss have been coming in. Overall... it's not TOO Tricky for 'cosplayers' (hate that word) to put it together. I can see a couple of cheap/easy ways - and I know how I'm doing the shoulder/side stripes (very carefully :p).

The only annoyance would be the delta meshing as it's such a specific pattern - but someone will print and sell it somewhere. Always happens. The pattern/style isn't hard. Good metallic's isn't hard to get either (I use it for Beyond rank braids).... from a sewing point of view, I'm absolutely loving this challenge!

The uniforms are incredibly well made, they just look really expensive and fitted. Direct opposite f those awful Raggedy Ann things in the Cage pilot.

They were dressing spacemen up in silver lame back in My Favorite Martian. It's pure cheese.

I like the arrowhead badges, dislike the rest of the uniform.

Life goes on...

bare midriffs?
Don't forget Skants!! (I prefer to think of Farpoint as TNG's MU episode)

Most of the SG1 costumes were likely fitted for the cast, rather than just 'raiding' military surplus.
Even DS9 had a little variation; the captain's vest, the "ship/shore" uniform as well as the new uniform coveralls, and Voy had a little more variety too.

And don't forget the baby blue briefs worn on Enterprise, maybe those will make a comeback too? :D

I like it, looks like a continuation of the Enterprise and Kelvin era uniforms with hints of the rebooted uniforms. I'm glad they didn't go with the sweaters from The Cage. That would have looked awful.

There's sort of a Mass Effect look to them as well.
