Thoughts on Discovery Starfleet Uniforms (Trailer Edition)

I'm not a fan. These uniforms might have worked for some post-VOY time period when nothing is set. But I'm an old school fuddy-duddy who would have liked a uniform corresponding to the design aesthetic we saw in The Cage/WHMHGB. These look more like something from the so-called Kelvin timeline and not something that would exist in this era of the proper timeline.

The uniforms are an oddity in the history of Star Trek in that they appear to be better designed and tailored for the female actors than the males.

That's fair.

I like them. It feels like they fit with the aesthetic of the Enterprise, Franklin, and Kelvin uniforms fairly well, as well as the Beyond field jackets, which makes sense for the time period. It also feels like the sort of detailing that the original show might have gone in for with better technology, much like how any modern historical drama has much better clothing than ones from the 1960s.

I wasn't impressed with the uniforms, the klingons, the Shinzou? was decent, but I really don't think CBS understand the difference between Prime and Kelvin universes. I saw the term "Privlin' to describe the trailer. I saw it as 'Prime-ish'.

It's like TPTB didn't even try to capture the look of TOS or pre TOS, even as JJA's films try to.
Has the trailer now changed anyone's minds yet? It solidified my views actually that it wouldn't be Prime after all, or they are going to have to use a lot of mental gymnastics to say it is?

I'm hoping to see a little more mirror universe aesthetic in the uniforms, sleeveless tunics, knives and guns, etc etc

You know, the uniforms were the one thing I didn't love about that trailer. They do seem to have a little too much going on, I would prefer something simpler and with more of the usual red/gold/blue color scheme brought in. Not to mention, JJ Trek has already done an exceptional job of updating the uniforms in a way that felt connected to what we had seen before, but also modern and suitable for a contemporary sci-fi production... don't need to fix what isn't broken.

That said, I don't see myself being seriously bothered by it in any sort of ongoing way, and the overall look of the show is great.

-I find it odd that these uniforms are compared to Enterprise. Cause they are blue?? They look more military and dress uniform like and less like the utilitarian jumpsuit style of the Enterprise era.

-The metallic colors are a sharp and clever addition.

Jotting down random thoughts for discussion:

- No, it doesn't look congruous what could be inferred with the prime timeline's uniforms of that era. But putting that aside for now...

- The uniforms' blue coloring is closer to ENT than what was seen on the USS Kelvin and arguably on other bluish Starfleet uniforms from that timeline.

- Departmental colors seem to have Bronze, Silver and Gold metallic fabric accents to equate to the more familiar Red, Blue and Gold/Yellow/Green/Whatever of TOS/ENT. However, at least one of the two crewmen up front are wearing bronze, where "classically" they should both be gold; I'm not sure if we see anyone else wearing gold besides the two top kicks.

- The insignia carry the TOS departmental symbols. Rank is displayed on the lower left point of the chevron and seem to be analogous to the TNG dots, but really, really tiny. Luckily we're all doing this in HD. :P

- The tunic is not symmetrical - the front zipper/opening is slightly offset to the wearer's right. Perhaps coincidentally, to balance this out the insignia is split on the wearer's left.

- The captain has additional gold piping on her shoulders, apparently denoting her CO position. Everyone else has a similar fabric texture on their shoulders, but only the Captain's has hers filled in.

- We see a tunic variant with short sleeves that someone is wearing walking down the corridor away from the camera. The latter MIGHT simply be what the undershirt looks like, given how form fitting it is. OTOH, all Starfleet uniforms are more form fitting for women for whatever reason.

- Perhaps for the first time since TMP, the uniform boots are not simple black material. They feature shiny metallic piping around the soles.

If the DSC uniforms continue ANY trend from the Kelvin timeline fashion, it's to make the costumes nearly impossible to recreate for cosplay on the average fan's available budget, without buying a licensed replica...

They don't care about the putative differences between the Prime and Kelvin continuities. Discovery doesn't match either; it's effectively a third continuity.
It's funny how some people are getting all fussy now that series is *not* what they said it HAD to be based on some self-imagine superior knowledge they had! :guffaw:
