Thoughts on a new timeline with a reimagined "modern" history?

Or Stargate SG-1. Although I'm at a loss to point out any TV serial space scifi from between those two that would really have been distinct or made an impact. Lots of clever zombie stuff, but very little space action. BSG was explicitly the opposite of a fresh start...

Returning to the original point, I think there's a fundamental issue with the idea of rebooting Star Trek to fit with modern history: history is always being written. Space Seed, airing in 1967, was already shown to be incompatible with our timeline as early as 1993 or so -- only 26 years later. That sounds like a long shelf life, but consider that ENT is already 18 years old. If it had been updated to fit modern history then we would already be reaching the point where concurrence with our timeline was starting to seem implausible.

I don't see Star Trek's different timeline as a bad thing. It's still the future we could imagine having but perhaps not due to the circumstances outlined in the show.
