As a child of the 80s, that line always makes me think of He-Man, Skeletor, Man-at-Arms, et al.

A show which was also made by Filmation so it recycled a bunch of sound effects from TAS.

I assume they pushed against the grill. Kirk struggled to remove one of the creatures from Spock's back, so we can guess that was not the "sting" still connected to Spock, but the creature holding on, suggesting strength.
