THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till release

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Last year when the Transformers Animated toys came out the Triceratops whose name had always been SLAG was changed. Apparently its also slang frequently used in the UK/EU for someting unsavorly(which I forget right now). I thought that was stupid but my European bretheren on the TF board I'm on thought the name change appropriate. But really do 8-12yr olds really know the bad slang for SLAG?
Slag is a slang term for a slut in the UK and Europe. It's such a widely known term that a lot of 8-12 year olds would know what it means.

I thought thats what it was. I stil say its not that big a deal. *shrug*

Marvel Studios has announced that Natalie Portman has been cast as Jane Foster in Thor.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

See below.

I think he's saying that he thinks Biel is a better actress than Portman.

Yes.

Plus I think she's better looking.

Okay. Your opinion is your own and I can already tell it'd be a waste of keystrokes to go back and forth with you.

I'll only say this. Let me know when she has won or been considered for awards honoring her for her acting. Portman has, a few times. Meaning that by and large Portman=good actress 1st, Biel=Eye Candy 1st and I'd contend that a large majority see it that way...
The playing field in Hollywood isn't level. A handful of actors get "first refusal" when it comes to the best roles (I think Cate Blanchett is an example of this). Portman probably gets better offers than almost any other actress her age. Consequently, she accumulates more awards.

No question, Natalie Portman is a fine actress. But Jessica Biel has had to fight the impression that she has nothing going on but her looks. I'd say that Biel began overcoming these unfair preconceptions after appearing in The Illusionist.

So the latest news is that Portman will star as Jane Foster. Congratulations to Marvel for continuing to attract top talent to their movies.

^^^
Biel was good in Illusionist.

Here is a link to the Jane Foster news.

Natalie Portman to play Jane Foster in the Thor movie.
Natalie Portman has been cast as the female lead in "Thor" for Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures says the trades.
Portman will play Jane Foster, who in early comic book lore was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character will be updated to a more doctor-scientist occupation.

If Chris Hemsworth is playing Thor, does another (less buff) actor play Dr. Don Blake?

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Blake's not in the movie, according to what most people are saying. If he was, though, he would be played by a different actor, presumably.

How can they have Jane Foster and not Don Blake? That hardly computes.

If Thor needs a secret identity, he can get help from Nick Fury. Fury can set him up with a job, give him a pair of glasses ("it worked for that other guy") and give him the name Sigurd Jarlsson. This happened in a THOR story written and drawn by Walter Simonson.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Using two actors would be silly and confusing for many in the audience. Between scheduling, makeup, effects, etc. it isn't that hard to film the same guy looking 'normal' and superheroicishly buff.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

I suppose the confusion comes from not knowing how much time will be spent in Asgard and how much in Midgard. I seem to recall that the original intention was to have be a period piece almost entirely set in Asgard, but if Jane Foster is meant to be the romantic interest then that seems rather less likely, unless something strange happens like Foster 'falling into' Asgard. Actually, that might not be so crazy: she would provide a modern bridge into the fantastic setting, a touchstone for the audience to relate to, and having Thor fall in love with her gives him a good reason to return to 'our' world at the end, in time for Avengers.

I think I'd prefer it, however, if Portman were to play a character in Midgard (Foster) and one in Asgard (the Enchantress?)... if for no other reason than we get to see Portman both in a doctor's uniform and whatever medievalish dress they come up with for the Asgard portions.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Well, maybe this is that "Thor makes Jane Foster a Goddess" storyline.

I don't think so and in any event it was Sif who did that not Thor.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

I think if the movie doesn't spend a fair bit (most?) of its time in Midgard, it's going to set up some tonal problems for The Avengers movie. Having a fantasy character next to Iron Man (and possibly WW2 Cap)... it'd be like having Gandalf in a James Bond movie.

I'd like to see Thor being redeemed in some way. Wasn't Don Blake Odin's punishment for Thor's arrogance? I was looking forward to that...

My thoughts as well.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

The original idea of a Thor movie set entirely or almost entirely in Asgard was abandoned. Here is Marvel Studios' description of the film in its current incarnation:

This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

^Definitely sounds like the Marvel comic I remember. I still hope we get to see lots of Asgard though.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Yeah, I think this is good news overall.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Yep, this was a matter of perfect director choice: Take a larger-than-life character/world and put it in the hands of a Director who knows just how to bring larger-than-life stuff...well, to life.

Re: THOR-starts shooting Jan2010: Updates, Rumors & Casting till relea

Branagh's been a bit hit and miss as a director in my opinion. Hopefully he's in the kind of form he displayed with Henry V and Hamlet rather than the distinctly underwhelming job he did with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
